4.0 out of 5 stars Tougher than it looks.
Taking this on the river, I didn't have much faith in its ability to hold up to a real beating. The thickness of the vinyl plastic doesn't seem much more than any typical pool toy, but it did take four hours on the river running rapids and hitting rocks like a trouper. The two chambers are reassurance that it won't go completely flat even if it does get a hole...

Taking this on the river, I didn't have much faith in its ability to hold up to a real beating. The thickness of the vinyl plastic doesn't seem much more than any typical pool toy, but it did take four hours on the river running rapids and hitting rocks like a trouper. The two chambers are reassurance that it won't go completely flat even if it does get a hole somehow.

The only complaint is the inner seam is big enough to be irritating. If the tube is covered with a towel or sheet it's not that bad, but it could have been smoother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for summer or winter, February 6, 2011
I got this River Rat for my brother and his family for Christmas. This item caught our eye because they would be able to use it for sledding type activities, as well as on the river in the summer. They haven't used it on the river yet, but it worked great in the snow! They love it and can't wait to use it more!

We go Tubing often and this tube has held up past my expectations. the ONLY problem I have with it is the tops heat up fast in the sun. so if I'm sitting in one place relaxing for a moment and move my arm its like I grabbed a cookie tray out of the oven with out oven mitts.

As pleased as I can be with the float, all things considered. Size is perfect for me (5'10", 225 lbs), and would definitely support someone bigger, and the inner chamber that stays filled if the large chamber springs a leak is fantastic, but I wish river rat would realize that, being almost explicitly used in the sun, black was a terribly moronic choice of color. Either drape a sheet/towel over the tube as you sit on it, be prepared to flip it every 3-7 minutes so you can lounge on a cool side, or risk intense burns as your skin comes into contact with the vinyl.

Really, really, really stupid color scheme, but otherwise a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars River Rat, July 14, 2010
These tubes are great. I have 3 of them that I use on the Delaware River all the time. I've had them for 2 years now and they still don't leak air. They are rugged and do fine going through smaller rapids and over small dams. I've also used them for sledding in a hay field without any problems. They weren't as fast on the snow as a reagular snow tube, but they stood up to the abuse that my friends and I can throw out.

I only used this once, so I can't say a lot about it, but it worked well. It is easy and fun to use, not very bulky when not inflated.

Took the tube down a shallow creek (3 times, about a mile) with lots of rocks and low hanging branches. Worked great!

This is an excellent tube if you don't want to spend a fortune on something durable and heavy duty enough to go tubing down the river with. Only drawbacks are it's black, so if it sits in the sun for too long it gets really hot, and it takes a long time to inflate and deflate it.
