5.0 out of 5 stars great boat, September 15, 2009
i love this boat. i keep it folded up in the back of the van and use it at a moments notice. i have 2 motors for it. a 2 cycle 3.5 hp tohatsu and a minkota 30 lb thrust trolling motor. the gas motor is great for cruising and site seeing. goes about 4 to 5 mph. the trolling motor's top speed is slower than the 2 cycle motors slowest idle speed. the trolling motor is completely quiet and great for fishing, but you wont go fast. my series 29 walmart marine battery has 205 amp hours of juice, so i should be able to go 6 hours or more at full throttle on the trolling motor, which is plenty. since i'm not usually on the water for more than a few hours anyway, the trolling motor is my motor of choice. you can actually have a conversation while the motor is running, which is something you cannot do with a gas motor.

i've punched a hole in the bottom of the boat about 6 times in two months. it's very easy to do. if you hit a stick, or push off shore on rocks, it will tear. if you inflate the boat on even mild rocks and step into the boat, it will puncture. if you look at a rock, and then look at the boat, it will tear. it patches very easily, though you will have water in your boat ankle deep while you are out on the lake/river. the boat wont sink so it's not a big deal.
i have not figured out where to sit for fishing. the inflatable seats are great if you are 4 feet tall. for an adult, they are too low. sitting on the tubes doesn't work too well since you cannot rotate around, and your legs want to stretch after a while. maybe straddling a cooler might work though that seems bulky to carry a big cooler for each occupant.

i find that i can deflate the boat and throw it back in the trunk sort of wet. as long as its not in the bag, it seems to dry out okay, as long as the interior floor is not wet. i usually flip it upside down for a few minutes before deflation to dry out the interior of the boat.

after punching holes in the bottom so many times on branches and rocks, i'm hesitant to take this boat on any type of float trip on real shallow waters where it will drag the bottom. i agree with a comment made that it will not survive any type of white water rafting either. so, for lakes and rivers that are deep enough, this is a great fishing boat. if the wind is blowing and the water is choppy, you will get wet if you are going against the waves. it tends to splash into the boat. adjusting the weight to the rear of the boat to lift the nose helps if you can. hugging the tree line and using trees as a barrier against the wind is critical too.

intex makes a nice air pump that will inflate this boat in about 3 minutes. you need a 400 watt or better inverter to run the pump. my inverter clips to my battery and does the job really well. i can be in the water in about 10 to 15 minutes once i park next to the water.

this boat is not fish hook proof. fish hooks go right through it with the greatest of ease. i think most owners will enjoy this boat as long as they can deal with the fact that it's made of the same material that backyard swimming pools are made of. this is not a river raft. it's not made of hypalon. it's made of cheap, chinese made vinyl. it's light and fun to go out on the water on. it's a great introductory boat if you dont have one. if you can stay away from obstacles of any sort, you will have a great time. if you want something with more substance, buy a hypalon boat for 5 times more money (used). hypalon is what is used in most commercial river rafts and that material deals with rock abrassion and impact very well.

btw, over inflating the tubes will kill your boat. inflating to the proper inflation in the morning is one thing, but when the sun shines down on your boat in the afternoon and heats everything up, your boat can be ruined with too much pressure. always keep in mind the air pressure no matter what type of inflatable boat you own. bleed some air off when the sun heats up your boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Boat!!!, August 20, 2009
By
I purchased the 2009 Intex Mariner 400 about a month ago for hanging out on the lake and fishing. It's an amazingly stable, comfortable boat - LOTS OF FUN and is worth every penny!!! Very high quality material... period!

Here are the items I purchased for the boat:
-Motor Mount
-30# Minn Kota trolling motor
-Minn Kota Power Supply Center (has a power gauge to show you where your battery status is)
-12 volt deep cycle battery
***You will want a rechargable air pump that you DO NOT have to plug into your car. You want to inflate your boat right next to the water.

The battery life is wonderful... I get approximately 4 hours worth of juice at full throttle. I cruise by myself between 5 and 8 mph. If you were to kick it down to low/medium I'm sure you can get 6 to 7 hours. The hard floor coupled with the the rugged hull makes this little boat incredibly sturdy... it never bends or buckles.

I recommend getting two large 50"x30" zip down duffle bags for storing/transporting this boat. 1 bag for the boat and 1 bag for the floor, oars and your gear. The bag that it comes with is SUPER cheap. I ripped it the my first time trying to put the boat back in the bag! Transporting the boat in 2 different bags makes it much easier to handle in regards to weight.

Here is the realistic set-up and tear-down times for 1 person doing everything:
It takes approximately 35 minutes from start to finish; install the floor, inflate the boat and then install the motor. Here is a tip!!! Inflate all 4 chambers about 30%... then put the floor in. After the floor is installed fill up each chamber in numerical order.
Tear-down takes around 20 minutes.

Another hint!
Get a 6x8 tarp to set-up your boat on. After it's ready to go you can push it right into the water. The tarp protects the boat against rough surfaces during launch. When you are ready to dock your boat use the tarp again... lay out the tarp and then pull your boat onto the tarp #once again, the tarp will protect your boat from rough surfaces).

I've had my 2009 Mariner 400 out on the water about 15 times so far. People always pull up next to me in the water and ask lots of questions... they are amazed that an inflatable boat can be so "sturdy" and user friendly.

How many people REALLY fit into the 2009 Intex Mariner 400?
The answer is 2! Sure you can cram 4 people into this boat, but whats the fun in that? 2 adults + gear still leaves plenty of room to stretch out and truly relax.

I recommend this product 100%. If you don't want to spend $1,000+ for an inflatable boat this is the best choice! You will not be dissapointed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love It With a Sail On It, September 2, 2007
The solid floor on the Mariner makes it seem even more spacious than its dimensions (which are generous) would indicate. The big flat floor that you don't sink into makes every square inch of floor useable. Plus, any water that splashes in quickly drains away beneath the floor, so you don't get a wet butt if you sit on the floor.

I mostly use mine fitted with a SailboatsToGo sail kit. I posted some pictures of it under sail above (click on one of the thumbnails under the main picture). The sail kit folds, so together boat and sail kit make a sailboat that fits inside of your car instead of on top of it or on a trailer. Very convenient!
