About the reviews stating that this is "basically an overpriced piece of bubblewrap" and that "it just covers the water"....
What did you expect? This is a POOL SOLAR COVER. Haven't you ever seen one in your life?

Yes, pool solar covers are basically an "overpriced piece of bubblewrap" that "just covers the water". It's bubblewrap specially made for the purpose, hence the price. I'd love to see you try to use hardware store bubblewrap as a solar cover. Fun times should ensue. NO, it's not meant to wrap around the pool. No solar cover does. It's meant to touch the water. When the instructions say to tuck in under the ring, they mean UNDER, as in IN the water, not OUTSIDE.

These prevent the water from losing its heat through evaporation and the bubbles, which by the way, must TOUCH the water, act as little greenhouses to heat it.

When you take it off, don't leave it in the sun, or else what happened to some other reviewers where the cover broke or the bubbles disintegrated will happen to you too. The sun will dry this cover and make it unusable.

This solar pool cover works very well. It does not sink (even when the sprinklers wet it) and heats the pool water too, especially near the water surface. The fit is good when you tuck the perimeter under the pool's top air ring (as stated in the instructions). I would recommend this cover to anyone with an Intex Easy Set 12' x 30" pool. It's so much better than the Intex Pool Debris Cover (which sinks into the pool). I've owned this solar pool cover for about 2 months. I don't know why the ratings include an educational value... some kind of solar experiment... ha ha.

This is great for heating the water in the pool. Not so great for keeping debris out. It's big and heavy (the 18' one is anyway) when pulling it off, then you drag it across the grass and stuff sticks. So when it goes back on the stuff goes in the pool. But you can't really expect to keep a pool pristine anyway. I like it better than the cheap plastic cover that came with the pool because it floats so it's easier to put on.

We bought one at the end of August 2008, and by July 2010 it was ripping. We also have the little blue dots all over the place. However, the blanket takes the full force of the sun for five months in our area (western Colorado, elevation 5,000 feet). At our elevation the sun is not blocked as much by air as it is at sea-level. So the cover/blanket is bound to get hammered and not last a long time. We got about seven or eight months out of this one but at $50.00 it's still cheaper than trying to heat it another way.

We use a salt-water system which works great but may contribute to the hammering also. I'm still happy with the product because it heats really well. The water was so warm recently that is was almost uncomfortable in the afternoon sun. The cover extends our swimming season by a few weeks at each end so that's a plus. Overnight here it can cool off quickly in spring and fall, which means even with this blanket the pool gets too cold to swim in too soon. Still, I'm going to buy another one.

We recieved our new pool cover for our 18 foot intex. It arrived very quickly and we immediately put it on our pool.We had just filled it a few days before it arrived so the water was ice cold!!We put our cover on the pool and 2 days later it was ready to swim in!!.Now,weve filled our pool before like this and let mother nature warm it up on her own, only to wait up to 3 weeks to even be able to get in the pool. All I want to say is that the cover makes our pool completely usable even in cool wisconsin summers. We usually get down to about 60 degrees at night and it doesnt cool this thing off at all.True story.... it was about 85 degrees here for about 3 days in a row and when we went to swim in it the 3rd day the water was actually HOT on entry!!Ive never felt that before in any size pool let alone an 18 footer!!By the way its true that if you own an 18 foot pool only order the 15 footer cuz they run way oversized when you receive them, people also complain of these things falling apart, well the cure is to wash them off with a regular hose once in a while to get the chemicals off of it....this is our 2nd cover the 1st one got torn up by racoons.great great product 5 star for sure just dont forget to wash off those chemicals ie chlorine ect... ENJOY!!

I bought 3 of these covers to float in my 32' x 16" pool. They are easy for me to take out by myself and I don't struggle with them at all. The man who sold me my pool heater told me to look into the lily pads for pools... or make them myself. These work the same way. Perfect solution to covering over 1/2 my pool to help retain heat! I highly recommend!

Background: I'm a first time pool owner - specifically the above-ground frame set up. I had trouble keeping adequate chlorine levels in the water partly due to the constant sun, heat, and lack of a stabilizer (cyanuric acid).

5 stars given for: Although this s a 12 ft diameter Intex product, it fits my 12 ft Summer Escapes (30 in deep) pool just fine. Light-weight, extremely easy to use. Thickness is similar to ones you buy at a hardware store to wrap furniture for moving purposes. It's hardier than regular, clear bubble wrap that you use for mailing fragile items.

Being that I just placed it on my pool minutes ago, I cannot comment on the effectiveness or lifespan though many reviewers have had good experience with heat retention. EDIT: I don't have a pool thermometer, but it DOES heat up the water to noticeable levels. The entire round flap sits INSIDE the pool and floats on the water, so it is NOT meant to be a cover so the edges do not overlap to the outside edges of the pool. There is a 2-3 inch gap of space between the solar cover edge to the sides of the pool - meaning some pool water is not completely covered. To me, this is useful for heat retention during cooler weather, and for those who plan to enter in and out of the pool frequently and do not wish to constantly use a cover. I've had it on the pool for 2-3 days and it as never blown away with light-modest winds.

Word of caution: Remember to let the pool water "breathe" or oxidize at least an hour a day to allow the free chlorine to effectively sanitize. Heating up pool water can also degrade chlorine more quickly. I also read solar covers can also lower the pH. Because of these reasons, I've stopped using the solar cover and bought an actual over-the-pool cover for now as the summers here are over 90-degrees. Solar cover photos posted.
