This review is from: Intimacy (A Critical Inquiry Book) (Paperback)
But shocking does not equal interesting, avant garde, culturally relevant, or worthy of discussion. I can't wait for the S&M craze to be over -- it is marginal because it's NOT ALL THAT FUN! Erotic Vomiting? Just because one can do something doesn't mean one should.
And the same thing goes for the Kipnis article on adultery. The author starts out by saying "Well, everyone is doing it" and ends with this brilliant philosophy: if you don't give in to every adolescent urge then you are repressed and unhappy. I am so sick of "intellectuals" (and yes I am an academic too) telling me that my life is boring and *gasp* puritanical because I don't satisfy every desire. Spend a few days with a crack addict. Very exciting! Not repressed one bit! Try making the difficult life decision to be faithful, intelligent, sexual, creative, and interesting as hell! This is much harder to do, but hardly sells titillating books. |
