Product Description

Review

Berta Rojas combines the best of Russell - musicianship and beautiful phrasing - with the slightly more polished technique of John Williams. She is a native Paraguayan who grew up listening to Barrios' guitar music, and it shows: Her phrasing, her sense of this wonderfully idiomatic guitar music is superb, as is her technique. Granted, John Williams, at least in his CD "From the Jungles of Paraguay," is incredibly polished, with a technique that outdoes David Russell. Yet Williams' phrasing, his approach to Barrios' music has a sameness to it that ultimately disappoints. David Russell, on the other hand, feels this music instinctively as well as possesses a fine technique. That combination seems to me to be a hallmark of David Russell's recordings in general. He is a consumate classical guitarist who seems in his element almost no matter what he plays in the classical guitar repertoire. Yet Berta Rojas, in her "Intimate Barrios" / all Barrios CD, combines the best of David Russell - the musicianship and phrasing - with the best of John Williams, to create guitar playing that is fresh , songful and alive. It is a very very special CD, an absolute must if you are a Barrios fan, or a classical guitar enthusiast. Strongly recommended. --Classical Guitar Magazine

First of all, I LOVE Barrios' music. I've listened to quite a few versions of it, including the CD-restored versions of Barrios' own recordings. Many players seem to get an idea in mind of how to play/interpret Barrios; then, play much of it fairly similarly.

THIS is different ... at times fanciful, at times folksy, at times formal. But, the interpretations just sound appropriate. If one listens to this, quietly and intently, it seem like it would sound in the mind of a person who lived their life in the culture of Barrios' native land.

If you haven't heard Berta Rojas play Barrios, you have yet to enjoy many facets of Barrios' music. Don't hesitate on this CD; it's terrific.

Amazon customer reviewers seem divided between David Russell and John Williams as to who is the finest classical guitar exponent of Barrios' music for guitar. In my opinion, that honor belongs neither to Russell or to Williams, but to Berta Rojas.

Paraguayan composer and guitarrist Agustin Barrios(1885-1944)
along with the Mexican Manuel Ponce and the Venezuelan Antonio Lauro(1917-1986) are among the best guitarrist composers of Latin-America. Barrios called himself "A true brother of the troubadors", and gave himself the name Mangore, after a Guarani indian chief. The present recording includes music by Barrios, some of it has come down to us by manuscripts, and others only by old recordings of the composer himself playing his own music.Berta Rojas does a wonderful job.

Sure. Segovia could play a little and was ahead of his time. But he sure was no Barrios with compositions and creativity - although sharp and a major force for sure. Still, Segovia sure isn't the king of the classical guitar. For him to call John Williams the prince of the guitar is merely empty words. The truth is that John Williams is the King of the Classical Guitar - by a mile. I play a little and have heard many of the greats out there. There is only one John Williams. He is absolutely the best classical guitar player of the 20th century and maybe even the 21st when all is said and done. Nobody is better. The sound that he gets from his instrument is tops. His technique is tops. His feeling is tops. His dynamic range is tops. The way he plays Bach cannot be approached by anybody. That being said, I was annoyed at first when listening to Berta Rojas play Barrios. I was looking for another potential King and wanted more of a driving tempo. But what I found instead was a Queen. Truly, here we have a Queen. As I gave it time and let it sink in I realized that she has given a lovely performance! Beautifully done! Intimate Barrios by Berta Rojas is worthy to stand by John Williams rendition as a Queen taking her place by a King. Barrios even from heaven is smiling. Don't miss this great music by these two great artists. Barrios will be brought to life before you - now rightfully taking his place as the greatest guitar composer of all time.

Ms. Rojas plays with the skill of a well-trained musician and the Fire of a young woman who loves the music she is playing. The music is as creative as her playing is sweet.A Desert Island disc for sure.

Barrios was both a guitarist's guitarist and a musician's musician, and he finds a capable and sensitive interpreter in Berta Rojas, who brings a delicate touch to these wonderful pieces. No less a guitarist than John Williams has said of Barrios that he was the greatest composer for guitar ever. A big claim, but one that you may be inclined to agree with after listening to Ms. Rojas' exceptional disc.
