Editorial Reviews

Cheaper than an hour of psychotherapy and as unbelievable as the headlines in supermarket tabloids, this biography is a colorful recap of the life of talk-radio host/shrink Laura Schlessinger. It's a portrait with plenty of cracks: her grandparents disowned her father because he married a non-Jew; she's estranged from her family (her mother's parting line: "If I'm not going to work for you, I have no further need for you"); she gives up radio success for motherhood only to turn to knitting sweaters to bring in money; she and her son barely escape a fire that incinerates their home; her husband almost dies but thunks onto the bedroom floor just the right way, miraculously restarting his heart. Whew. And those are just some of the headlines. No wonder the secular feminist turned Orthodox Jew became determined to use her radio show as a platform to "raise the ethics of a morally bankrupt society." She's been an "impact player" in radio, says fellow talk show host Larry King. Dr. Laura is a polished storyteller with no need for hyperbole. --Valerie J. Nelson

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than You'd Expect May 29, 2001
This was a pretty even-handed treatment of Dr. Laura. Fitting a synopsis of anyone's life into one hour is a major challenge, but in this case you come away with a feeling that you've learned a little more about what makes her tick. My friends that love her say it was not nice enough, and those who hate her say it was too nice. That tells me it was probably fair.
