I had to purchase this book for one of my classes and I thought that I would be receiving some cheesy text about how men are from mars and women are from venus. This book is essentially the exact opposite of that. I would say that almost all of the information provided in the book is useful in my everyday life. It's an easy read, but goes into enough detail to really understand all the issues. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a refreshing read that actually has solid information on intimate relationships. I have taken a whole semester course on the psychology of love and this book covers it all. Well, almost. It's not written as an opinion piece, there is actual research that has gone into this text.

I'm 56 and I've had more than my fair share of great to terrible relationships but there is always more to learn. I was also a social psychology undergraduate three decades ago when I took a course called "The Psychology of Intimacy" where the readings were mostly conjecture of poor quality. I was delighted to see how much the research in this area has grown. Make no mistake, this is a textbook so everything it talks about is based on solid research. But it is an easy read; I don't think many high school students would have difficulty with it. Many parts are fascinating like the discussion of physical attractiveness. Here is a wild finding. They took women who were judged to be at different levels of attractiveness and asked them to sleep in a T-shirt for one night and bring it in for an experiment. Then they asked men to smell the T-shirts and rate how well they liked the smell. Amazingly the best looking women were perceived to be best smelling as well - and the men had never seen who they were smelling! If that doesn't entice you I don't know what more to say - it is really interesting book that will teach you a great deal about intimacy.

I bought this book for a course I was taking in college. Interesting textbook, and would recommend someone reading it if you want to learn a bit more about relationships, and positive ways to interact with others in them. I enjoyed the course (even though it was online), but the textbook definitely made it more interesting.

Its a really really good book because it breaks down many subjects in to chapters that get to the point.
The print is a little small but I really enjoy it on days that I just need some mental stimulation in reference to relationships.
More insight !

This book was required in my class, The Psychology of Interpersonal Relationships. I loved this book so much that I did not sell it back once the semester ended.

The chapters are beautifully organized. The book goes into friendship, love, arguments, family, acquaintances, breaking up, and bascially every aspect of a relationship that you can think of. It is written in an exciting, interesting way, while being completely understandable. The grammar and syntax are great as well. Reading this book not only improved my psychological knowledge about interpersonal relationships but also taught me how to actually improve my relationships in real life. I reccommend this to both psychology students and regular people.

Unlike many "pop psychology" books available, that just kind of present the author's theories with no real evidence, this is written by academics, and all of their arguments are supported by the most recent available data. Rather than just giving platitudes, this book actually debunks common myths about relationships using studies that reveal how people actually relate to each other. Furthermore, there is not only a lot of information about romantic relationships, but also insights about friendships and parent-child relationships.

I bought this book for a college elective, but have found it to be a great read - I wish all of my textbooks were so readable and informative. In fact, my roommates have even picked it up once or twice, because it simply doesn't read like a dry textbook.

Relationships are such an important part of life that if you are looking to improve the way you relate to others, using the best available data is the way to go about it. This book will give great insight both inwards and externally to others, and is well worth the money.

I purchased this book originally for a college class. Have since purchased MANY more for gifts! This is the first and only time I have ever recommended a textbook for personal reading but it is THAT good.

I have read so much pop psychology relationship guru bull@#$% over the last two years since my divorce. This was the first thing I read that was not salesy, but just a college textbook based on years of research and studies. Some of what you may learn will surprise you. Some of it will just make sense. It's not popular - it's not selling millions of copies - and it's not a quick easy two day read. But when I am curious about an idea, I can flip through it, or read an entire chapter. It is well written, and not dry at all, and the subject matter is so interesting. It is truly a book I will keep for the rest of my life, and toss all my other kindle downloads teaching you how to manipulate men into marrying you, or the ten steps to getting someone to fall in love with you. Thanks to the authors for putting in the time and research to create honest quality reading material about a subject as mysterious as... well. Love.
