Book Description

Alicia is so obsessed with being popular, she does things that would shock her parents, if they knew. Hector is aware the gang that wants him to join may be the death of him, but he will not decline. Sam was a baseball star, but can't play the sport he loves anymore because he is wracked from football injuries, a sport his father will not let him quit. They are just a few of the teenagers that readers will meet, in this candid book authored by a 34-year veteran high school teacher. Voted Teacher of the Year and Coach of the Year, Bruce Gevirtzman shares with us the results of his years spent talking with teenagers about topics from life and lust to depression and death. Revealing honest, poignant words shared in conversations, classroom talk, interviews, surveys, and journals, Gevirtzman takes us inside the minds of today's youths, and also contrasts them with teenagers of decades past. Topics include teen thinking and secrets on issues from sex, drinking, and drugs to peer pressure, self-imposed standards, and beliefs about what is important, and painful, in life.

Including interviews with fellow teachers, Gevirtzman's book is threaded with one recurring truth: Sadly, instead of parents and teachers and lawmakers and the public looking out for our kids, today's kids are largely left to fend for themselves, he concludes. Not only will general readers and educators find great insight in this work, it will be of interest to students and scholars of adolescent psychology, clinical psychology, and social work.

Review

"Gevirtzman uses entertaining and enlightening student interviews, surveys, conversations, classroom discussions, and recreated scenarios from his four-decade teaching career to assist readers in better understanding contemporary adolescents."

-

"Gevirtzman understands adolescents. In this sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, always informative work, the author (a high school English teacher who for years has been involved with adolescents in various capacities) introduces readers to the wonderful individuals he has come to know. . . . A must read, this is a how-to manual for understanding adolescents and inviting them into adult life…Essential. All readers, all levels."

-

Choice

"In his very effective storytelling style, [Gevitzman] relates many moving, thoughtful, and sometimes very funny and heartwarming stories about teens. . . . This title is filled with many useful and helpful suggestions for parents, teachers, others who work with teens, and even teens themselves. . . . This is an easy reading text that will be beneficial for parents of teens or for those who work closely with teens."

Review

"Bruce Gevirtzman has the remarkable ability to understand the teenagers he has mentored over the last four decades. I know because in 1973 he taught me to think, speak, write, and critically read about a world that seemed so confusing. His wisdom and his passion have left an indelible mark on every teenager who has had the fortune to step into his classroom. His book will guide teachers and parents to realize that they must listen to the children they have been blessed with and help them to be rooted when the winds of adolescence challenge them. Bruce Gevirtzman is to teaching as Dr. Mary Pipher is to the girls she counsels in Reviving Ophelia."

5.0 out of 5 stars powerfu, funny, August 31, 2008
This review is from: An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers: Shaking Hands with Aliens (Paperback)
Great insight into teenagers from someone who should know, but the most interesting parts come from the author's comparisons of teenagers from forty years, AND his ability to make fun of kids. And even though he does make fun of them, he comes off as loving them, too. The most powerful parts of the book are the chapters about sex and the one about death. The funniest parts are the chapters about the weird kids and the one about kids that can't do anything right. Some of the author's solutions may seem to be too little, too late, but maybe that is why parents of small children or would-be parents should read this book, too. At almost 300 pages of very small font, parents, teenagers, and even teachers get their money's worth!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great knowledge & advice for all caregivers of children, October 14, 2008
This review is from: An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers: Shaking Hands with Aliens (Paperback)
Many would think that just by being a parent, we'd have all the insight in the world into our children's lives. Unfortunately, we cannot possibly be there for many of their important moments -- moments that occur during school hours, for example. Also, parents might not be the ones that our children look to for advice, or for answers to their many questions. Fortunately, there are teachers who care enough about their students, and strive to make a difference in their lives.

The book, "An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers," was written by one of those caring teachers, Bruce Gervirtzman. Bruce has more than three decades of experience as a high school teacher, coach, play director and debate advisor. He's seen first hand many of the situations and distractions that teenagers have experienced, and thus has gained valuable knowledge of how and why they act the way they do. Throughout the book, Bruce provides readers with personal stories, experiences, and great advice for parents and caregivers of children.

We highly recommend this book -- what parent couldn't use advice from someone who has seen first hand how children act when their parents aren't around, or when they go through situations that they cannot discuss with their parents? We think it's worth being more informed than not...and this book provides wonderful information. It's a great read, and highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Adult Angst?, March 24, 2011
By
Hilah (Pennsylvania, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers: Shaking Hands with Aliens (Paperback)
I couldn't even make it through this book, on account of this guy's angsty, condescending tone. Instead of humorously commentating on adolescent trends, etc. it seemed his passion was fueled solely by bitterness. He seemed like the type of adult who compensates for his own teenage years by verbally battering the entire age group... And the kind of guy who would laugh at his own jokes, or obsessively worry about the crab grass in his yard. In short, his attitude is a major buzz kill.
