5.0 out of 5 stars Zelia is it!, December 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Intimidade (Audio CD)
If you think Brasil has no more female singers that Gal Costa or Ellis Regina, please check Zelia Duncan. I know, these are different stiles, however, just listen to Intimidade and you feel captivated. Zelia, along with other female Brazilian singers (for example, Marisa Monte and Belo Velloso) are to be heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars New generation on MPB!!, December 16, 1998

With Adriana Calcanhotto, Cássia Eler, Paulinho Moska and many others, Zélia Duncan became one of the most important new generation's singer on the Brazilian Popular Music (MPB). Her album 'Intimidade' is easily a first team pop album worldwide as per its lyrics, rythms or magical compositions. The brand new album "ACESSO" is simply amazing and it realy represents the richiest brazilian criativity on swing and music matters. ENJOY!!

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars content, plus 1 for great potential, August 24, 1999

If you listened to all the tropicalismo-MPB stuff years ago and wonder why the U.S. is only now stumbling upon Caetano Veloso (how old is he now, 60?) and OS Mutantes (duh! maybe it would've been nice to hear about the band while it still existed?), Zelia Duncan and Adriana Calcanhoto are two interesting new Brazilian singers who write their own stuff. Duncan's singing voice is maybe even lower than Simone's or Maria Bethania's -- if you know these singers, you know that's sub-alto somewhere -- which will add interest value when your friends ask "who's that guy singing" and you hand them her CD. Regardless, her songs are tight and rock-oriented (no sambas, none of the interminable Buarque/Veloso/Djavan covers that even late-1990s Brazilian singers can't seem to stay away from). It'll be interesting to see how her career progresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her Best, October 21, 2001
This review is from: Intimidade (Audio CD)
I was recommended this album by a young woman from Brazil at a kd Lang concert. I have since bought her other two albums availble here as well; Outra Luz and Sortimento, but it is to Intimidade that I keep being drawn back. First off let me state that I don't understand a word of what Zelia is singing - so I am only affected by the way she expresses it. The music on Intimidade is somewhat experimental with some great musicians and songs that seem to be trying to find a unique sound. Outra Luz (her first album) is a much more traditional Brazilian Pop Album. I recently received Sortimento and maybe expecting a further departure - was somewhat dissapointed - but it is still a very good recording.

If you are not at all familiar with Zelia Duncan I would recommend her albums in this order:

1. Intimidade (between the other two)
2. Sortimento (2001)
3. Outra Luz (1990?)- which is under a different name - Zelia Cristina.
