Biography

When you consider the impact that BIGELF had in 2008 with Cheat the Gallows, it’s inevitable that people expected the highly-rated band from Los Angeles to strike again quickly and fiercely. But instead we got an astonishing silence due to an impromptu hiatus and the tragic death of guitarist A.H.M. Butler-Jones. However, all that is about to change with the arrival of Into the ... 3.0 out of 5 stars WAIT FOR THE REMASTER April 6, 2014
By kilgor
Format:Vinyl
Foe a technical band that produces music which requires some inteligence to listen to, they produce some of the worst mixes. The Cd sounds LOUD, nothing but LOUD, too compressed to bother with. I also got the 2xLP on red vinyl, pre-orderred and shipped from Germany. WASTE OF TIME. Pretty red vinyl, but who-ever mixed this mess needs to go back to school. Sounds like it was mixed by a deaf man. Muddy, distorted, flat. Look guys, if you want to compete in the real music world then hire a better mixer. Spock's Beard have released thier last two albums on LP and they sound wonderful, full, rich, clean. this LP as good as it should be is ruined by pure lack of attention to the final result. I will not be buying anything by these guys without first finding a free download to hear. Burn me twice, no more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great New Album - Glad BIGELF is Back April 27, 2014
By Big El
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It took a couple of listens, but this is a great effort from Damon Fox. It doesn't hurt that Mike Portney (Dream Theater, Transatlantic) helped his buddy out by playing on drums. Hey, Damon almost called it quits for good......that would have been really sad. One of my favorite CDs so far this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing twist on the Prog genre April 3, 2014

A great offering by this alt-prog band.
This is a very engaging listen. Put the cans on and let them take you on a ride.
Melodic yet crunchy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bigelf finally deliver! August 14, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Has it really been six long years since the release of Bigelf's last album, 2008's fifth long-player "Cheat The Gallows"? Yes. And has the band endured a significant lineup hiccup in order to now returned with a new supporting cast of characters, including guitarist Luis Maldonato and Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy? Maybe so. But the Los Angeles band's vision remains as focused and unified as ever: To kick out some of the best and most psychedelic progressive hard rock this side of Mastodon and Wolfmother.

The Eighties hard rock revivalists definitely possess a strong resemblance to Black Sabbath, Dio, UFO, Type O Negative, and Led Zeppelin, but they are every bit as equally influenced by, say, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Mr. Bungle, and Jethro Tull. Various comparisons to the likes of Rush and Tool can also be made. And, of course, the Beatles are also another major source of inspiration -- and needless to say, it is very fitting when considering how Bigelf have long since described themselves as "the evil Beatles." And now all they have to do is live-up to such a prestigiously high description, and darned if they do not come awfully close on this 2014 recording.

The heaviest song on "Into The Maelstrom" is "Control Freak," because it boasts a big, fat, sludgy, and instinctively memorable main riff, and a little shred-lite soloing. And all the while this is going on, the drummer, Portnoy, thumps away at his trapkit in a manner very similar to Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. It all makes for one very heavy and doomy song, and one that is not likely to be forgotten anytime soon, but not the only standout track there is to be had, here.
