A step down,

Fixmer/McCarthy have definitely gone in a more subdued direction with their second full-length release. Their debut album, "Between the Devil," was an incendiary industrial dance meltdown from beginning to end, but they have toned things down on "Into the Night" to the point where I would classify the new sound as middle-of-the-road synthpop.
I'm not quite sure what they were trying to achieve with this release. Gone is the sense of raw aggression that defined the first album, and in its place is... well, some pretty pedestrian stuff. The tempo is slow-to-middling, the beats just don't hit very hard, and the vocals are much softer, with an emphasis on singing rather than shouting. The album might be considered a success if it had been released by Duran Duran or Depeche Mode, but it's not what I want to hear when I put in a Fixmer/McCarthy CD. It is indeed dark and moody, but it's too safe and conventional. Can't fault them for trying to vary things up, but the results are lukewarm. Here's hoping the new Nitzer Ebb album that McCarthy is working on delivers the real beats!

Great record. If you liked the last one, you will love this one. 'Banging Down Your Door' is a timeless track. Amazing.
