5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated gem.
It's a shame. I don't know what's wrong with Universal; they've never really cared about this movie, it seems. -By that I mean they've never bothered to letterbox it. This movie never looked all that good on any of its video releases; I seem to remember it always looking pretty lousy, even on laserdisc. 3.0 out of 5 stars "...Maybe you can help me. What's wrong with my life? Why is my wife sleeping with someone else? Why can't I sleep?"
This MCA edition of INTO THE NIGHT is a clear full screen dub that has a HiFi audio track. The sound is however still quite good. Despite being well over 20 years old, the tape I purchased at a thrift shop performs very well, and is in fact more durable in construction and heft than later-day VHSs. (Also available on DVD.)

This movie never looked all that good on any of its video releases; I seem to remember it always looking pretty lousy, even on laserdisc. It's such a funny and exciting little thriller with a great (and sleepless) Goldblum, a tough and sexy Pfeiffer, an even sexier Harrold, a nasty Bowie, and lots of famous faces in cameos. -Enough reasons for a DVD, I should think !.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my all time favorites, January 2, 2002

This is a great movie that is always underrated by critics. Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer are wonderful here, at the start of their careers, and without big star egos. The surprise cameos are fun and the story is fresh and unique. I recommend it to anyone who is tired of the same old plot and action. This is well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable film, June 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Into the Night (DVD)
This is a chase movie, a kind of film-noir without the black and white. Here the ordinary man is Jeff Goldblum, a guy so so unhappy with his mundane job and cheating wife that he spends his nights driving the LA streets instead of sleeping. One night he finds himself in the wrong place at the right time. He interrupts the murder of a beautiful and mysterious Michelle Pfeifer and very shortly he finds himself her unwilling accomplice as both evade her ruthless pursuers. She warns him right up front that she is "one of the bad guys", but he's hooked. The chase takes them to all of the "mink-lined sewers" of after dark LA and lets them encounter quirky and sometimes violent characters. This movie plays like a mix of dark comedy and thriller. It has a plot twist of sorts, but does not end darkly. The cameos will be interesting to film buffs, but not to anyone else. It's Goldblum, Pfeifer, and the chase that drives this movie. And thankfully, the story - though improbable - strings tightly together and does not involve stupid car chases, explosions, or wanton killing. In fact, the violence is tame by today's standards. There's the brief nudity seen in 80's movies and occasional mild profanity. A nice film to rent. I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early 80's LA reality unveiled, August 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Into the Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)
From the creeping traffic to the obnoxious foreign nationals, from the sordid Hollywood streets to the ostentatious Marina district, from the miasmically bland aerospace office environment to the nightlife of the rich and famous, this film captures the very essence of Los Angeles in the early 80's. If you lived there at that time you experienced everything in this movie with the exception of hooking up with Michelle Pfeiffer! The uninitiated may find the plot line highly improbable. However, LA cognoscenti know that the plot line is only slightly improbable. And that's why we love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless in LA -- Landis Dark Horse, October 25, 1999

This review is from: Into the Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)
John Landis knows his characters and he knows LA. The unlikely match of a classy mistress and a nerdy engineer accidentaly thust together in never-ending LA.

Jeff Goldblum's dry delivery and Pfeiffer's quiet despiration produce (as strange as it sounds) a winning mix.

These people are achetypes in an endless city. The jokes all have that odd edge to them that verges on Lubesch.(sp?)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!, March 25, 2000
This review is from: Into the Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my all time favorites, too! Everyone loves David Bowie as the bodyguard/assasin, but his knife-wielding nemesis is none other than rock 'n' roll legend Carl Perkins (Blue Suede Shoes). Also look for that great little telephone scene with a very rare appearance by Jim Henson. There are so many great bits with so many famous directors-as-actors they could fill a small book. I make every movie-buff friend I have watch this flick. You should too.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Gets By With A Little Help From His Friends, January 4, 2000

In an effort to support Landis in his legal tribulations, a glittering array of Hollywood heavyweight directors and actors, with a rock star thrown in, toil as bit players and extras to make a manic movie with ultra-dry wit and tongue-in-cheek dialogue. Goldblum and Pfeiffer play their roles a little subdued compared to what is going on around them. It all makes for a well-constructed comedy that became an instant cult favorite. The more times the viewer sees it the more nuances and cameos jump out. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie, April 5, 2008
This review is from: Into the Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my favorite movies from the 80's. "Into the Night" is a wonderful combination of bizarre plot twists, endearing actors, and wild characters that is hard to resist. Given that it is 20+ years old, and some of the comical aspects of this movie are the cultural remnants of the 80's, some of the humor may not translate well for those who didn't live in the 80's - but it's still a great movie that I watch fairly frequently and still watch on VHS tape for effect. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Into the Night", November 10, 2006
This review is from: Into the Night (DVD)
I owned this film on VHS for years, and when it mysteriously disappeared I ordered it on DVD. It's a sort of cult film with an amazing array of cameos and is one of my favorites. It's quite violent in spots, but I like the story, and Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum are excellent. I loved the ending, which I won't spoil for you. Simply put, if you like a good suspenseful yarn with a lot of action, you'll love it, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into the Night, July 15, 2011

This movie has it all. Had to upgrade my VHS to a DVD for library. This movie has a little action, adventure, mystery, drama, and comedy all wrapped into one. Actors are, well, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum, need I say any more? Music is so vivid in this movie, I could actually feel the warm balmy air and swaying palm trees. Great short appearance from the late Richard Farnsworth and short guest appearances by a host of popular folk. Can't really say what its about without spoiling anything. Its a great date movie, or a sit home alone solo movie. Don't read narrative, if you like the lead actor/actress, just watch and enjoy. One word of caution to anyone with issues of suicidal gun: turn head during airport scene about 3/4 through movie, short scene doesn't show much but does bring up visual of idea.
