Sarah Elgeti is one multitalented young beautiful Danish lady who finds her introduction to world audiences in this excellent album of her own compositions. Though many likely understand that jazz from Denmark has had a major impact on the international jazz scene, few artists can match the caliber of this Sarah Elgeti. She not only composes and arranges, but she also performs on both tenor and soprano sax, flute, and percussion - if that isn't a spectrum, what is?
There are twelve works on this CD - each form the hand of Elgeti - and they are performed with a group of top flight musicians appropriately titled the Sarah Elgeti Quintet: Marinne Markman-Eriksen, alto and baryton sax, Christian Bluhme Hansen, guitars and percussion, Jens Kristian Andersoen, bass, Thomas Praestegaard, drums and percussion, Ben Besiakov, piano and Rhodes, Mikkel Uhrenholdt, alto sax, and Magnus Poulsen, alto sax. The emphasis is on creating new textures form old instruments and the sound that these musicians create is big and rich and complex. Even the titles of the works by Elgeti are creative: Home, Bossa among the trees, Out in the fields, Downstairs, Ringe I vand, But I wish I could, Trying to forget, Clouds (particularly fine), Angelique, Night moves, and a bonus track of a Remix of Bossa Among the Trees.
One aspect of the arrangements and the performances of these works on this very outstanding album is the interplay between performers - solos and duets and pure accompaniment depending on the piece - in a manner that makes each work unique and memorable. Sarah Elgeti and her crew should find a comfortable audience here in the US, the home of jazz. Grady Harp, January 12
