Book Description

In Susan Gal's delightful young-concept book, a family travels up a mountain, over a bridge, and under a canopy of trees to reach their campsite in the great outdoors.  A forest hike offers more opportunities to showcase words that describe spacial relationships and show young readers where they are in the world. Beside a lake! Next to a waterfall! On top of a mountain! Then after the sun slips behind the hills, they'll snuggle alongside each other and dream sweet dreams inside their tent among the trees.

Gal's pictures capture all the beauty of the natural world. And she's included a humorous cast of animal characters on a parallel journey of their own, so the art is full of funny things to spot.

This is a gem of a story for parents and teachers to share with their happy campers.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book September 26, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The pictures are great and the story is very fun. Following the escapades of the bear and the baby has brought additional enjoyment to reading this with my son. We started reading this together when he was about 1 and he still enjoys it today at 2-1/2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! February 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover
INTO THE OUTDOORS is a wonderful book, and one that I appreciate on many levels. As an art history professor, I'm dazzled by the artist's bold and innovative compositions, glorious and sophisticated color sense, and fabulous use of texture, expression and line. And as the father of two young children, I appreciate the book's true child appeal. Not only is it a fun lesson about prepositions, but a lovely story that my kids want to hear over and over. Like the animal friends in the pictures, my children follow intently the characters in this warm and happy family, and their fun but safe adventures (especially delighting in the scene where the bear returns the little one's fallen hat.) A gem of a book!
