Book Description

Max Paddington refuses to go into the light until he finds his killer. This presents a dilemma, since Max is even less competent as a spirit than he was as a live person. No one sees or hears him and he can't manage to get anywhere or do anything on his own.

Joe Cavelli is a private investigator, living an ordinary life. Then one day he walks across a parking lot, gets yelled at by a ghost, and his life only gets stranger from there.

Max and Joe team up to find Max's killer. In the process, they form an unlikely friendship and change each other's lives in ways they never expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heavenly Read July 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Before starting "Into the Light," I read a comment by author Darcia Helle stating that the novel was very different from her usual style. I'm a creature of habit. I know what I enjoy, and if you throw a new secret ingredient into the mix I'm probably not going to like it. I'm an adult version of Mikey from the old Life cereal commercial.

As a fan of Ms. Helle's writing, I truly wanted another Michael Sycora series thriller. I would have gladly accepted another exceptional stand-alone like "The Cutting Edge." But the author's comment about writing outside of her genre made me lower my expectations considerably. I'm here to tell you, I was dead wrong.

After reading the book I felt like a Beatles fan hoping for another "Rubber Soul" or "Revolution" and getting "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." "Into the Light" is absolutely terrific. It grabbed me on an emotional level that I don't equate to reading. I found myself relating to Max and Joe like they were personal friends instead of fictional characters.

While the storyline may not fit neatly into any genre definition, there is no mistaking the quality of this novel. I suggest you read it on a day when your spirits need a lift. Don't be surprised if it continues to delight you weeks after you've turned the final page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crying & laughing in all the right places December 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
Darcia Helle had me crying and laughing in all the right places with her tale of unfinished business, regrets, and the power of love. I really enjoyed her curly-haired hunky PI and related to his plight/fears over potentially parenting a special needs child, as I have a son on the Autism Spectrum, who also has ADHD. I look forward to reading more from Darcia!

I received a free copy of Into the Light for the purpose of reviewing it, but that did not affect my opinion in any way.

Suspense, random blood splatter and mismatched socks consume Darcia's days. She writes because the characters trespassing through her mind leave her no alternative. Only then are the voices free to haunt someone else's mind.
