I am not sure how I first came across Pilate (now Pilot Speed) due to legal issues Canadian versus American. Anyhow, this is just a reissue of their Canadian release of Self Control... I don't care which you buy, but buy one of these guys' records. The voice shines with brilliance and a little angst. These guys should be HUGE. 10 years ago, they probably would have fit in right with Dishwalla in the upsurge of Alternative. Now a "post-grunge" band, they blend beautiful angst with beautiful ballads. I love them. I just now saw them in Columbus, Ohio WWCD (CD101) "Big Room." A small acoustic setting, seating about 15. Totally acoustic. I was in awe by the beauty. Please take note, and support this band.

Contrary to a previous review, this American import of "Sell Control for Life's Speed" by the former Pilate is identical to its source except for the deletion of "Lover Come In" and the addition of "Into Your Hideout" and "Alright" from 2003's "Caught by the Window."

I only heard the album's first single "Barely Listening" on my city's alt-rock station, but that was all it took. Listening to this album shows strong influence by early U2 and the Cure, but singer/lyricist Todd Clark's wordplay and the grinding/melodic instruments give this band a life all its own. The songs range from romantic to dirge-like, but they never bore and they never tire. Not a single song disappoints. If you're looking for haunting lyrics and stirring melodies, "Into the West" is your one-stop shop.

I heard "Barely Listening" a few weeks ago on XMU, XM's College Rock station, and as I heard this I thought to myself what ever happened to edgy late 90's alternative bands like Unwritten Law? Nowadays grundge bands or semi goth-grundge bands are being shunned away by regular radio stations to make way for mediocre bands like Reliant K. Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, and My Chemical Romance seem to be the only three that are trying to keep the semi deflated ball rolling. Hopefully with the Canadians introducing bands like Pilot Speed(orignially called Pilate)the ball will be full of air once more. Their sound, while it is not original is rich, melodic, and full of intense, pulsating energy. Plus, P.S. is an amazing live band. They recently opened for The Dears, another fantastic band from Canada. Oh and yes, if Pliot Speed got into a fight with Dishwalla, the Speed would have them "Chasing Blue Cars".

I only heard of Pilot Speed through watching a Kevin Bacon Film recently and their track 'Alright' was on the soundtrack. I bought the album on the back of this great song and was not disappointed. Great melodies, moving and moody songs. Sort of reminds me of U2 in places (normally this would be a bad thing, but it works here). Love it.

The songs on this CD were pretty good. Loved Track Nine! I found this after doing a search for that song after hearing it on the Movie "Death Sentence" with Kevin Bacon.

It is a bit on the melancholy side.

I learned about Pilate(non Pilot Speed) when I was way into the Canadian music scene that involved Finger 11, Our Lady Peace and Wide Mouth Mason in the late 90's/ early 2000's. I heard "Caught By The Window" and was blown away instantly. It was one of the most solid rock albums I'd heard in a decade or more. The sad part is that no one will ever hear them in their purest form like that again with a release like this. Into the West is sort of like a mix-tape of the best Pilate songs, and re-released for the US. The songs are still great, but it's different knowing there were 2 full length releases full of good music, but were cut down to this. If you want to understand what Pilate is all about, buy/download "Caught By The Window" then move on to "Sell Control For Life's Speed". This album is just a sample of what they are. It's painful when a band tries to break into a different mainstream and does so at all costs.

Before Into the West, Pilot Speed (formerly known as Pilate) released two albums in Canada. This release has all the songs from the second album MINUS one song PLUS two of the best songs from the first album. I think this is the perfect release. Not only is Pilot Speed music now available in the U.S. (and at a super low price), but you get the best songs, in my opinion.

I only cared for a few of the songs from the first album, and most of those made it onto Into the West. Nearly all of the songs from the second made it and the one that didn't is not a big loss.

Do yourself a favor and give this underrated Canadian band a chance. You won't regret it.

For the record: my favorite Pilot Speed song is Alright (which is on Into the West as well as the first album).

This album and these guys are good! You like Pink Floyd, great, so do I. You like Vertical Horizon, me too. I downloaded a couple of their songs and was hooked, then I bought the album and downloaded everyone of the tracks onto my IPOD. This is some great melodic rock stuff, do not hold it against them because they are from Canada, these guys rock. I cannot wait for their next album, if you want to try something different, try this. This is what REM should have been. My new favorite band is Pilot Speed.
