Gr 2-4--Pleasant looks at the history of human transportation through three simple, yet informative large-print texts with spectacular, full-color photographs. Except for a few stock historical views of early automobiles (Behind the Wheel) and aircraft (Taking Off), the pictures are sharply focused and dramatic in composition. There are also photos of restored or re-created vehicles such as a Viking ship and the Mayflower II (Into the Wind) and World War II vintage trainers and warplanes (Taking Off). Into the Wind is the most widely international in its scope, showing a variety of types and sizes of sailboats from all parts of the world and emphasizing each one's unique features. The tinted pictures in Ken Robbins's Boats (Scholastic, 1989; o.p.) depict many boat types, but only a few sailboats. More technical details about airplanes and aeronautics can be found in Cheryl Walsh Bellville's The Airplane Book (Carolrhoda, 1991), while Philip Steele's Cars and Trucks (Crestwood, 1991) does the same for automobiles and their engines. Otfinoski's glorious displays, however, will provide visual pleasure, from their full-cover photos to the romantic sunset views at each book's end.
