Editorial Reviews

Product Description
In fact, not only is this his second solo album, he's Scottish and unlike anyone I've ever heard of. The album is powerful and extortionate. 'Break my Heart' is a thumping opener with deep lyrics and fantastic vocals. 'Devastation' sounds a lot like Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue's 'Where the Wild Roses Grow'. It's almost heartfelt yet hurtful, and powerful yet mellow and chilled out. 'Monday Night Nothing' it is just The Pogues, but a Scottish version. In fact the whole album is virtually inspired by The Pogues. The Celtic thing is there. 'Bear with me' is the rockiest song on the album. It almost has an edgy but soft feel to it. The vocals make the audience feel safer, like they know what's to come in future songs. Chemical Underground. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless, January 13, 2006
This review is from: Into the Woods (Audio CD)
Middleton is at the top of his songwriting and guitar form here, each track is a complete wonder. He goes so gracefully over so many burnt feelings and out of place understanding. Completely unrelenting. Driving through the bull of trying to be what everyone expects of you. It's not natural to exist and make others know you to exist musically and that's it. Malcolm Middleton is a co founder and member of Arab Strap, truly one of my all time favourites. Here he takes a break to do most of the singing, even though his partner plays drums occasionally, it's a good album. "No Modest Bear" bumps the party, and when you get to the end of the album it leaves you so complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars This album is great., January 4, 2007
This review is from: Into the Woods (Audio CD)
I really liked his first release, but this one blows it away. The first one felt like a collection of songs, but this is a stand-alone album and I've been rocking it quite a bit. There's some really superb songwriting here and it's very different from his work with Arab Strap- you end up feeling like he is fully-developed performer, and not like this is some "solo album from the guy that's in Arab Strap." Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Future Classic, September 7, 2006
This review is from: Into the Woods (Audio CD)
I LOVE this album! Being Scottish I'm obviously a tad biased but in my defence I'd say that this album is not the kind of music I'd normally listen to or buy. Having said that I picked it up last year having read a favourable review somewhere which tweaked my curiosity. Every track is unique and memorable, the thing that gets me is the maturity and lyricism of the music, sure Malcolm's lyrics are fantastically dour and deeply self-deprecating, clever and moving but the layers of compexity, the suprises at every turn and the breathtaking beauty that underpins the album never wear thin or outstay their welcome. It's a great drinking, sing-along, heartfelt beast of a thing and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has a heart, a wry sense of humour and an adventurous musical ear. Five big fat, steak McCoy's stars.
