5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instruction for the Darkroom Novice, March 29, 2000

This review is from: Into Your Darkroom Step by Step (Paperback)
In the dark about film development and printing processes? This book is an excellent, truly "step by step", guide to setting up and using your own darkroom. What makes this book stand out from the rest is its organization. Each step in the developing and printing process is described in detail and photographed in sequence, which makes it simple to follow while you're learning the basic steps, and easy to use as a reference later to check a particular point. Some guides I've seen give general descriptions of procedures, which are apparently meant to be fleshed out with information from other sources. This book stands on its own as a complete instruction manual with a number of extra tips to increase your liklihood of successful processing and printing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Resource, September 28, 2003

This review is from: Into Your Darkroom Step by Step (Paperback)
This is an excellent resource for beginners. THis book gives you information on how to set up a darkroom, develop film, make proof sheets, make prints, and also gives some basic troubleshooting techniques. The layout is very convenient. Every page had black and white photos to demonstrate the technique being presented, so there are no chances to make mistakes.

If you're a advanced photographer, you probably don't need the information in this book. If you're a beginner, this book is a necessity. As for me, I'm a casual photographer and I don't have my own darkroom. I rent a darkroom about 4 times a year. When I go to the darkroom, I always review this book the night before. That way I can refresh my memory on the darkroom process. If you are such a casual photographer, I can recommend this book for that purpose. Check it out.

A must have for anyone interested in developing your own Black & white film. Clear, concise. Step by step with no holes in any of the developing procedures. I probably wouldn't of started my own darkroom if it wasn't for this book. Get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy to use step by step guide, July 19, 2000
By
This review is from: Into Your Darkroom Step by Step (Paperback)
This is an easy to follow guide with simple instructions that get good results. The many diagrams and photographs certainly help when you're a novice in the darkroom, or serve as a useful reminder if you've been away from the darkroom for some years as I had. The book is printed sideways so can be taken in the darkroom and referred to as needed, and pages turned as you work through the various processes. My only criticism is that it should have been spiral bound, making it easier to open flat on the table while working from it, but overall a very useful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Like the ABC's, January 19, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Into Your Darkroom Step by Step (Paperback)
This book is like learning your ABC's. It's a step by step guide, easy to follow, easy to understand and doesn't get too technical for the beginner. I bought other books, and they're good, but get too detailed for a impatient new comer. I just wanted to dig in, and this book walked me through it! Put my darkroom together and developed my first roll of film in nothing flat - talk about instant gratification. My 11 year old daughter was able to take this and develop her own roll of film by herself. If you're new, want fast progress and interested in the basics - get this book!

Dennis Curtin's book is an easy-to-understand, step-by-step procedures handbook for the beginner in B&W darkroom work. It covers setting up a darkroom, developing B&W film using standard Kodak chemistry, and making prints and enlargements. Easy to read, easy to go back to as a reference. It does not cover color work in any way.

I picked this book up as I recently got into shooting 35mm and have never developed my own film. Great reference book.. the content is a little outdated. however it answered some questions I had about the film developing process.. this book only covers black and white film developing. Still a nice book to have.
