Book Description

July 20, 1989
Why is your wind instrument out of tune? Why is perfection in instrument manufacture still and elusive goal? What are the immutable laws of physics that conflict with one another to cause problems? Check out this important document that helped to spark the resurgence of interest in wind instrument acoustics and tuning problems in the 1950's and 60's. A widely quoted book that has inspired numerous articles in music journals, and generated studies by dissertations in University Departments of higher education. It combines experimental evidence with acoustical research from the Library of Congress, tempered by empiricdal opinion. Extensive studies were conducted with the skilled musicins of the famous United States Nvy Band in Washington, D.C. A rather unique work, written in plain language without the use of baffling higher mathematics. The basic laws and principles of physics are unchangeable and remain limiting factors in the quest for perfection in the co! nstruction of wind instruments. A third reprint of the original Ph.D. Dissertation first published by the Catholic University of America in Wash. D.C.

This review is from: Intonation Deficiencies of Wind Instruments (Paperback)
I bought this book as part of my research for a intonation CD method for woodwinds. It has detailed information about the intonation qualities of all wind instruments and a good presentation of the science involved.

However, the fact that the studies were done in the 1950's means that many advances in scientific understanding are missed, as well as advances in instrument making technology.

For example, the study of clarinet intonation is valid for instruments made at or before the 1950's. Intonation of instruments today is better, I believe, although certainly not close to perfect.

The charts of notes up and down the playable range as a comparison of each instrument on that note is a valuable tool for people playing, or writing for winds.

This is a valuable book about intonation....one of the few.....and if you are serious about the subject, you should have this in your library.
