Book Description

October 1, 1997
The intent of this book is to provide a measure of practical training through examples of traditional and contemporary styles of writing for the double bass. It also deals with technique, facility, and endurance required for solo work by means of carefully graded exercises. These exercises are designed to strengthen the fingers, overcome difficulties in intonation, and, in general, establish a good contact between the student and the instrument. Includes lots of instruction and close-up photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent set of excercises for the Jazz (or any) bassist, September 12, 2002
By
This review is from: Intonation Plus (Paperback)
I'm a jazz/folk/rock player who's mainly self-taught on the upright, and for a long time I was searching for a method that would really orient me on the double bass- in particular, a method that would help me with position and intonation. Simondl is good, but without a teacher to guide you, it's incomplete. It doesn doesn't say too much about technique, and much of it is devoted to things that are important in the classical realm but less so in jazz. After all, how often does the typical jazz bassist find him or herself playing baroque ornaments in 3/2 time in the key of C sharp?

I discovered "Intonation Plus" by accident and ordered it on pure speculation. I'm supremely happy I did. Here's a book that teaches exactly what one needs to know about classical technique. Rather than pages and pages of repetitious excercises, you get a few very specific exercises designed to instill specific skills. In a short time I found myself much more comfortable moving quickly into higher positions and playing two octave scales accurately.

There's a volume 2 as well, though it's not in print- it's available only as an E-book. Perhaps some publisher will think about issuing the two in one volume.
