Book Description

April 2005
The adventures of the Intrepid Force continue in this second volume of the series. The attack on Venus Base had been stopped. Corbalew's plan had been defeated, but that was only beginning. With only a single ship outfitted with nightmarish technology unknown to late 21st century science, Corbalew had been able to destroy Venus's defenses in a matter of minutes. Now an armada of these ships has surrounded the Earth and rendered planetary defenses useless. Still weary and healing from their last battle, the Intrepid Force struggles to understand the mystery of the phantom fleet and, if possible, to find a weakness. Who or what is Gogue, the mysterious warlord who leads the invasion? He claims to be the Antichrist, a figure from Christian prophecy, but is he really? Aided by Neema, a young woman who claims to have come from a dark and terrible future, the Intrepid Force works to unravel the mystery and free their world before Neema's future becomes their own reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex group, plot, and resolution! 4.75 stars!, November 25, 2005
This review is from: Intrepid Force: Invasion (Paperback)
In reading Tim Wise's second book I found the same, large, familiar team of superhero-like young adults, but this time the plotlines were even more complex and intricately woven together. Several of the characters' backstories were delved into to flesh out the deeper story. The juvenile banter of some of them was, in the context of their character, appropriate.

The technological aspects were expanded beyond the first story. I remember everything from orbital platforms, to androids, to time travel projects, to nanotechnology; among others. And I'm sure I'm missing some.

Neema is more involved in this story, and even old relatives of one of the characters play into the story. In a few areas I became confused with the details, but nothing to ruin the story. I did a little review and most things cleared up. One character lost his battle suit, then he had it again soon after. This threw me, until I realized it was not unique to him and was military issue, thus he must have located another one to use. These little things sometimes go along with having a deeper, more complex novel, instead of the light reading of many books today.

Overall, the story, characters, and weave of the story is deep, complex, and interesting. When I can't see the end coming, I know the book is good! This book is! If you like the concept of a young, superhero-like team, doing their best to defend the world against a mysterious and deadly threat -- pick up this book -- but read the first one beforehand (Intrepid Force) as the stories are interwoven.
