2.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful...
Unfortunately this book did not deliver what I was hoping for. Simply put, it's the author's financial biography. However, it is filled with LOTS of unnecessary information.
For example, to explain the concept that rather that straight competition sometimes we need to colaborate with competitors in order to win, the author goes into a NASCAR history filled with...

Intrepid is a book that deliver results.

I read "The Intrepid Way" a year ago. After reading the book, I was very much inspired by Matthew's courage in his journey toward personal freedom; hence, I made a committment to take "leap of faith" and go for it.

Today, I am have acheived the freedom at age 34. I now have the freedom to spent more time with my family and work on interesting personal projects that I never had time to do before.

There are many "street smart" concepts that Matthew shares in the book. My favorite ones are,

1) Expense and Income Layer - this is one step beyond what Robert Kiyosaki teaches in Rich Dad, Poor Dad. By truely understand the Expense and Income Layer, it made me realize that I don't have to be millionaire in order to retire young.

2) Leap of Faith - when things get tough, I continue to remind myself that I need to "take action" and have the "leap of faith" that things will work out.

3) Drafting Partners - I have leveraged through my mentor, my business partners and creating win-win to reduce the amount of time it takes to build up the needed knowledge and newtork.

There are many more "street smart" concepts in the book. Yet, Matthew also had the formal MBA training; hence give him the gift to expalin his concept in an easy to understand fasion.

I am highly recommend "The Intrepid Way" to anyone who want to walk awy from the corporate job and find better way to live out the life! Life will never be the same again.

Keep the Passion Alive,

I have spent many years and $$$ on personal education about investing, property & business building.

For me, Matthew's concept of Money Layers (expense and income layering) was worth the price of the book. Everything else was a bonus.

I rate the Money laying concept right up there with the Poor, Middleclass & Rich spending habits diagram from Rich Dad Poor Dad
for insite provoking and thought changing.

If passive income is something that calls to you, I suggest you should pay close attention to this concept.

5.0 out of 5 stars field report, February 27, 2006
This review is from: The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want! (Paperback)
The Book is the story of the author making it to the other sides of the "cashflow-quadrant" (R. Kiyosaki) from employed to self-employed to finally investor and business owner. Unlike Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" it's not written from the distance of a succesful retiree, but from a still young entrepreneur who did not longer want to waste his most productive times and energy on someone else's business. Especially of interest: how he creates good-will to start long-term business-relationships, how to build multiple income-streams, thougths on the value of time and time-freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those that want financial & time freedom, October 11, 2003

Matthew Chan explains real well what we didn't learn from our parents or school teachers. He writes how we can achieve both financial and time freedom in these times of economic scenarios. He writes with simple language to understand simple concepts.

I did not get bored reading "The Intrepid Way". Usually business and financial books are boring. But, Matthew kept my attention and focuses on reading and made it very interesting to read. I'm also going to share the information on "The Intrepid Way" with people that I come across and with my clients.

He talks about residual income. That's music to my ears. I want to make money while I'm sleeping.

Matthew writes for people to think where they are in relation to current circumstances in life and get the upper hand to become financially free. No more grinding work and say goodbye to captor type of environments.

I like how Matthew expresses entrepreneurial mindset. He expresses through the power bestowed on each one of us. Use the power within and Matthew shows how to develop that inner power and transform into money and time power.

I highly recommend "The Intrepid Way" and place it with the business library books for reference. I also recommend reading the book occasionally to get the juices flowing again.

Great Reading

5.0 out of 5 stars A joyful read for a few who refuse to be average ..., June 4, 2004
By
Yann Yu (Woodland Hills, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want! (Paperback)
Are you unhappy with where you are in life right now
and want to do something about it?

Are you tired of doing the same thing day in and day out
but are not satisfied with the result you get?

Are you unsure of how to go about and draw up a personal
plan to change how you do things everyday in order to
get what you ultimately want?

It is my personal observation that many times in my life
I was deeply unsatisfied with where I was. I wanted
to make a change but I seemed to go back to what I was
doing because of two reasons:
I could not come up with a clear workable alternative;
I had the fear of unknown.

In life, everyone has a "success formula". I realized
that my success formula didn't work too well because I
kept getting lousy results.

I was working in secure, well paying jobs with benefits.
But my heart was somewhere else. I then tried to start
my own business and to do contract projects in computer
software development. I made good living and gained
a lot of business expertise and experiences. However
I felt trapped and could not see a way out to my personal
freedom: I have almost no control over how I spend my time;
I have no income as soon as I stop working.

I know I was created for a special purpose in life.
I want to find out what that is. Ancient wisdom says
it all: "never die with music in your heart."

To me personally, when I read this book, by simply knowing
that someone has been there and done that, with a clear
"hiking trail" of success and failure, lesson learned and
rewards obtained, my confidence level shoots up to the top
because it is now tangible, workable. This book removed
many of my blind spots and revealed doors of possibilities.
I can see what it looks like. There is a
blue-print, a template. Now it is easy for me to personalize
it. I can take small steps consistently on a daily basis.
I know I will get there soon by doing just that.

It gives tremendous sense of personal freedom right now
to know that I am committed to make small changes everyday.
The outcome will take care of itself.

The book is a living documentary because there is a companion
Web site and it is updated frequently. So it can be fun
to see how others are walking down their true path to fulfill
their purpose.

I have been wanting to make career change but I have been
putting it off and could not figure out why. Now I realize
that it was because I did not see an alternative. I attribute
much of my new enthusiasm to reading this book and getting the
insight on what are potentially available to me. It is tried
and true and it can be simple. It makes my work now effortless
because my decisions are easy.

The question is not whether to read this book now for
extraordinary insights and advices or to stick to the
conventional "wisdom" and keep doing the same old thing

and be average!

The real question is this:
do you want to live your life from inspiration or do you want
to live your life the way you have always been living, tired,
stuck and desperate in the next month, year, 5 years, 10 years ...

From now on you want to be inspired, don't you?

5.0 out of 5 stars Self-Help Could Change Your Way of Life!, May 6, 2006
This review is from: The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want! (Paperback)
This may be the best self-help book that you ever read! Unfortunately, for me, it came into my hands much too late, for I've already finished a life-long career. Still, as I read the book, I found myself getting enthused and even exploring new ideas, just as I used to do! Matthew Chan in The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want may indeed inspire the necessary courage, may indeed help you determine whether you are brave enough to follow his guidance. You may have the entrepreneurial spirit and the courage that can result in your totally following his formula to success. Maybe not! Regardless, this is still a Must-Read book! Why? Let me share my experience with this and other books by the author.
Matthew's books are written as if he is talking directly to you. He is the teacher. We are his students if we want to be. He willingly has agreed to be our mentor and has indeed written his book as if he were right with you, discussing each topic, each issue. Sometimes he's enthusiastic, sometimes he's brash, sometimes he may offend-but always, he speaks what he feels is "truth" and he challenges you to consider and respond to those truths.
The Intrepid Way is based upon a formula. A formula for Personal Freedom.

Personal Freedom = Monetary Freedom + Time Freedom

Matthew Chan has solid advice about the use of money, creating layers of income, etc. He shares his fears when he risked taking the necessary step to follow his dream. He shares his successes. His guidance is specific and easy to follow, easy to understand. In this and other books, he discusses his choice to become an entrepreneur.
What does that mean exactly?
Well, he quit his job! He eliminated the stream of income that most of us use for our entire life. He chose not to depend upon having a salary coming in every single month. He chose Personal Freedom.
Without support from family, friends, or a salary, Matthew Chan worked hard to achieve his goal. As you read his book, you may be interested in the way(s) he achieved monetary freedom. He shares in detail about his work in real estate, writing, and selling on the Internet. His thoughts and ideas are there for you to glean and develop to meet your own needs.
Aside from the money issue, which is very important to any goal, any dream, I'd like to share my personal story about why I believe this book is a must read. Matthew Chan realized early enough in his life that he needed personal freedom and that had to include time freedom. Most of us learn from the past, from our family, from society-that we should plan to find a career for our future in order to bring in the necessary money from which we live. Unfortunately, nobody shares that, in doing so, we may lose ourselves!
How did Matthew acquire his wisdom so early? We don't know. He probably doesn't even know because it did not come to him through his family ties, or through his long-term higher education studies. Perhaps he first subconsciously saw it. Perhaps through one or more of his continuing education courses, he began to move early thoughts into his daily conscious. Thankfully, for him and for those of us who read his book, we can also review and, hopefully, work to correct and save the rest of our life!
I speak from experience. After 37 years of commitment and loyalty to one institution, I was given a letter that my position was eliminated. Yes, there is a lot more to it than what I say here. However, one of the reasons that I chose instead to retire early was that I had sufficient years and funds in a "mandatory" retirement program that allowed me to retire before I was 60. Before that, however, I had had a medical leave of absence mandated on job burnout. I had no other life other than work, even church was another time commitment that I felt had to be met. I had indeed lost all time freedom and my personal freedom to the job. When the doctor told me I had to choose between life and my job, there really was no choice in my mind. I walked out and, in many ways, I continued to "walk out" for many years thereafter.
Now, the point I make is that through a mandatory retirement program and length of employment at one institution, I have the stream of income that is important to sustain basic life needs. If I had had no retirement program, I would have been in a position many of you may be in if you were to also lose your job, your career!
Consider right now, that your personal freedom is not only important, it may be the only thing that keeps you from physical, mental, spiritual or emotional burnout. Your job is NOT your life. I know that now after a commitment of nearly 40 years to an institution that, in turn, had no commitment to me! The Intrepid Way is an answer! It may not be the only answer; i.e., there may be other ways than Chan suggests to ensure that you have the required monetary freedom. That's not really the point! The point is to read between the lines. Absorb what Chan shares with us, with you! Let the book awaken thoughts that you have buried because you are doing the only thing you think is possible. Remember The Intrepid Way only requires that you have courage. It requires the courage to seriously review your life and ensure it is the life you want to be living. Chan will be your teacher, your mentor, if you allow him.

This review is from: The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want! (Paperback)
Financial freedom is all about having multiple streams of income coming in so that you don't have to work. I know Matthew personally and he has streams of income from the Internet, from royalties, from real estate and several other ventures. Everything he says in this book really works and I highly recommend that you look at it.

As an entrepreneur and free spirit I loved this book. Investing has been a serious part-time hobby/obsession for me for years and this book and its content were fabulous reinforcers of guidelines and principles that are essential to me in my personal journey to financial freedom and an abundant life. The book is 202 pages of concise easy to read and understand information that speaks to the reader about life and money in a new and profound way and shares valuable information I have not found in any other material I have read/studied/come across.

If you are looking not only to find financial freedom within your life but true personal freedom as well I recommend this book because it will open your mind to the endless possibilities available to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Put You In The Right Mindset for Investing, September 17, 2004
This review is from: The Intrepid Way: How to Create the Freedom You Need to Live the Life You Want! (Paperback)
In this book, Matthew really explores and develops the patterns and thought processes needed to break through limitations of 'old-school' investing.

Using income layers (along with debt and payment reductions) to create positive cash flow really is the path to financial freedom.

Reading this book in conjunction with his second one on real estate investing will answer so many of the questions that even cutting edge financial schools leave unanswered.
