One of the things that has always surprised me about Sherod Santos's work is that each book seems different from the last. I never knew what to think about that, though it made reading each new book an adventure. Because of that, getting to read the selected poems has given me a new perspective on what that means. While the style seems to vary with each section, the constants re much more obvious. It seems that from the beginning he has always been a deeply passionate, lyrical and yet cerebral poet. How do they all go together? He seems to make ideas into experiences, though I don't know if "ideas" is even the right word. I guess I mean that he writes with his "whole being" (to resort to a cliche). Mind, heart, senses, intellect--the bodied world--everything comes together in his poems. I don't know, but for my money this is one of the most interesting poets writing today.
