Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Mannerling, a stately country mansion in Victorian England, possesses an apparently bewitching, sometimes fatal charm for its owners and is sending the Beverly family to incredible extremes in order to reclaim this family home, lost due to the father's gambling debts. This scenario was established by Chesney in volume 1, The Banishment, in which the first of six sisters manages to shake off the spell of the old homestead, marry, and move away. This second novel in the series features the machinations of the next daughter, Jessica, to marry the son of the new owners, despite the fact that he is an absolute cad and his cousin is a dreamy, intellectual, and well-propertied young man who has fallen for Jessica. In this, her fifth Regency sextet, Chesney demonstrates her usual flair for romance, repartee, and period touches. From the Inside Flap

NOTHING COULD STOP HER QUEST--EXCEPT, PERHAPS, LOVE. . . .
Mannerling, the splendid family estate gambled away by Sir Beverly, remained the passionate desire of his daughters. Beverly himself had died; the eldest daughter, Isabella--having failed in her bid to reclaim their home--was blissfully wed. The mantle of savior then fell to the next eldest daughter, Jessica.
How fortunate that the new owner of Mannerling had a marriageable son. In truth, Harry was a brutal lecher, a drunkard, and a wastrel, but Jessica, blinded by determination, vowed to secure a betrothal. She was barely aware of the attentions of handsome, charming Professor Robert Sommerville, whose affection for Jessica was equaled only by the fear that her obsession to secure Mannerling would lead to disaster for all concerned.
As scandal and intrigue swirl around her, Jessica must discover where the heart finds true happiness. . . . --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

By A Customer
The Daughters of Mannerling is a nice series. Easy and enjoyable reading. A glimpse in how life was like a couple hundred years ago.
