Book Description

Amid the 80,000 abandoned buildings in Detroit, a battle shrouded in secrecy is brewing. The Greek Olympian, Ares, runs the city as his own personal Coliseum while Apollo and Hermes struggle to shield teens from his deadly hobbies. Ares endless supply of gladiators is all the more accessible because the abandoned buildings of Detroit have become the flame for moths of ravers, vandals, scavengers, and urban explorers. The key to the entire conflict, Calliope, is just hoping for a fresh start now that her lifelong crush has finally noticed her. Although hoping for a fresh start in Detroit, is like saying you’re going to Las Vegas in search of true love. She soon catches the notice of one of the Immortals that recognizes her for what she is: a Night Muse. A Muse is a human that carries the soul of an Olympian within her, which gives the god immense power. Until Calliope reaches adulthood and awakens as a Bright Muse, there is no way to determine who her soul mate is. The Immortals start to draw Calliope and the people she loves into a deadly chess match. With her best friend’s life at stake, Calliope must seize control of her destiny and eliminate the deadly threat herself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tough to review March 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This one is tough to review. I like the concept enough to give that 5 stars. Characters pulled out Greek mythology and plopped into modern Detroit as vampir.... err vampyres, using humans but needing them. It somehow works.

The negative here is that this book is in desperate need of an editor, even if that is just the author re-reading it really really really slowly and re-editing it. Simple errors were left in. I tried to ignore them but, yeah, it started to get on my nerves. Things like "are" for "our" or plurals missing the "s", wrong uses of "your" or "you're", etc. If I had highlighted along the way, it'd be shocking how many goofs I'd found, this being the worst I've seen personally when it comes to me spotting errors in a book.

There's also the fact that the main character explains early on that she has her own slang for curse words -- a cute idea for a YA book. It keeps parents happy. It's just overused to the point of abuse. As in that character would be ready to beat herself and her friends up after a week. Or at least they'd be moving on to new words quickly if they used them THAT often.

Don't get me wrong, despite my complaints, I did leave this book curious about what is next for Calli(ope), her Greek gods, and even a few of her high school buddies. That's the good. With some editing, this series can be amazing, right now it's just okay.

4.0 out of 5 stars have to agree with delusional angel May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book definitely needs proofreading. I try to avoid buying series from free books because they often lose their steam, but I have to know what happens. Congrats to a writer who can tell a story that kept me even while I was twitching at the need for editing the grammar and sometimes typos of double words.

Bottom line: Get a proofreader, I'll even volunteer. I need the next book!
Thanks for twisting history, mythology and today into an engaging story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, with a very good plot... January 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was more of a YA novel, but I really enjoyed it. The storyline was great, and I loved the cast of characters. I have always been a fan of Greek mythology, so I found this new twist really amusing. I liked it so much, in fact, that I made it a point to look f or more books by the author, which I don't normally do. I'd be happy to read any new novels she writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Treat. November 10, 2012
By R8chlo
Format:Kindle Edition
I found Intrigue to be very entertaining overall. The main character is spunky, funny, and has her own mind despite all the ridiculously looking male characters. Calli is quirky and I love all the pop culture references. The premise that the Greek gods (Immortals) are also a version of vampire is a cool twist also. I like that each character in the book can stand alone and that the Immortals each have their own agenda but I feel that the character Calli will have them all eating out of her hand before it's all over. If you like strong female characters, Greek gods, vampires, and snarky comments this book is for you. Plus it's free on e devices. Looking forward to the next installment. Will be interesting who Calli ends up with eventually or if it is any of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved every page... April 17, 2012

The author did an amazing job bringing these characters to life while making us fall in love with each of them. This book truly had it all! It had me guessing, laughing, my heart strings thrumming with action, heartbreak, and romance. I smiled so much my face hurt by the end of the book. In two words this book was "refreshingly perfect".

The heroine was just the right amount of snarky, sweet and caring, interesting, with a black belt in standing up for herself. No wimpy girls allowed but it wasn't one of those always aggressive girls that get on your nerves either. The author did a great job with Cali. You will love this book and be waiting for the second one to come out like me in no time. Just read it! I promise there will be no regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book pleasantly surprised me! June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'll admit it, I wasn't expecting much from this book. Turns out, I loved it! Once I got into it, it proved to be hard to put down. I love how the story centers around the muse. Usually anytime you read a story involving anything Greek it involves the gods. Normally I'm ok with that because Greek mythology has always been an interest of mine but centering the story around the muses is a unique perspective to Greek mythology. And the characters are very lovable! Anxiously awaiting the next book in the trilogy!!!

Calli is seemingly your average, normal girl... but she's not, really. You see, Calli is short for Calliope, as in one of the nine Greek Muses! Read more
