Challenging and Intriguing mathematical problems for everyone, July 19, 2006
This review is from: Intriguing Mathematical Problems (Paperback)
This great book is amusing and informative in its approach to solving mathematical bafflers, and presents not only puzzles but a treasury of theories, games, and oddities of all kind.
Although primarily intended to entertain, the wide variety of puzzles, ranging from easy to solve curiosities to very difficult to solve exercises, will challenge everyone, keeping their minds going at full steam.
The book is divided in five sections, made of approximately 30 problems with solutions for each one at the end of the chapter
- Fun with numbers.
- Fun with letters.
- The odds explorations in probability.
- Where inference and reasoning reign.
- The answers are whole number.
This is an example of what you could find in this book (Fun with numbers. 33-Mixture):
"One glass is half full of wine and another glass twice its size is one-quarter full of wine. Both glasses are filled with water and the contents mixed in a third container. What part of the mixture is wine?"
A delightful and thought-provoking adventure in recreational mathematics.
