Book Description

January 13, 2006
Behold the diversity of the human spirit as you enter a higher plane of existence; a place where good and evil take many forms and a search for fulfillment takes center stage. Here you may find mirrors of your own desires as you explore a multiverse of painful beauty and enticing mystery. A balance of rhyming and non-rhyming verse, this collection attempts to combine the human with the divine, the modern with the archaic, and the simple with the complex. From sheer fantasy to love and spiritual struggles, the poet paints a variety of visions from a palette that defies categorization, speaking to the reader through vivid imagery and tales of emotional conflict.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is a poetry collection that combines both traditional and unusual poetic themes with a hint of neo-gothic flavor. Themes include dark fantasy, dreams, labors of love, religious struggles, science fiction, nature, and existential philosophy. Unillustrated, both rhyming and free verse, inspired by Lovecraft and Poe.

About the Author

His poems have appeared in over twenty-four anthologies (including twelve in the U.K.) and two audio recordings, and his poem "The Unwritten Quest" has won a place in the Forward Press Top 100 Poets awards. More About the Author

Sometimes I feel like I've been alive a lot longer than I have. I suppose this might partially be a result of my family having moved frequently when I was very young, but even then it seems that I remember far more places (and events) than my parents can recall. Now, in actuality these strange notions of an extended childhood might have an easy explanation, for we often recall things that others don't... and for most of us, it is normal for our childhoods to seem like nebulous tangles of mysteriously distant memories... but forgive the gullible daydreamer in me, for at times I extend upon this notion and allow myself to entertain the possibility of past lives, or at least parallel ones. Laugh at me if you will, but either way I like to think of myself as an "old soul". Whether I mean that literally or strictly as a metaphor in jest, well, I'll leave that as a mystery. Needless to say, as irrelevant as these questionable memories may seem in a modernized and rapidly developing world, I have found much use for them as an inspiration for a large number of my poems.

I completed my first collection of poems, "Intrinsic Desires", after I moved to New York in the year 2006. Years later, I expanded my emotions and abilities with "Ab Antiquo, Ab Aeterno", which also includes my newfound love of prose poetry. To me, the obscure but catchy Latin phrase (which means "from the ancient, from the eternal") represents the "old soul" in me as well as the person I am and always will be. After delving into my heady prose, some may feel that I am merely prodding at the obscure dreams of a man who is sick of reality. However, to me I am just saying what is on my mind... and I insist that every poem is backed by a wealth of complex (though very authentic) human emotions. To my surprise, I have discovered many who find an anchor in my writing that they can relate to... and I continue to seek them out by spreading my craft to the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars enticing you to explore the written word, March 16, 2007

Poetic works that pull you in, enticing you to explore the written word, and leaving you momentarily lost in a jungle of metered beats are the sort that are perfection to me. Leave your greeting card verse at the store. A book of poetry worth sinking your mind into is "Intrinsic Desires," by Brandon Gene Petit.

In a tone that reflects an intricate mind, Brandon offers moments in time, scenes of life, and instances of fundamental feeling. His work is rich with imagery, from twilight skies to lantern lit walls, cobblestone streets and naked, wet trees, all vividly painted before your eyes. His words express fluidly a mixed bag of emotions, from sadness and longing to heartbreaking yearning, despair and desire, pride, self contentment, and love. The poems work magic on the reader, enticing to pause and go deeply into each setting, taking the time to truly understand what is being said. Brandon invites you to go Beyond Summer, breathing the freshly decaying scent of the air, hearing the rustle of leaves, and feeling the glow of warmly lit windows from the outside looking in. He dares you to examine A Dying Breed, where you can witness the tormented soul of a vampire, enduring death, tormented by ingrained desires, a man with no master, and content in his ways. With a nod to the last page, Petit shares this, "We pass the torch to our better halves and sell our souls to a nobler craft." A poet, Brandon is a gifted artist at this nobler craft.

It is a different sort of poetry book; one that quietly offers to hold your attention and that will remain in your mind until it has you completely. Intelligently offering viewpoints you might not otherwise have come across, the work is darkly compelling and decidedly fresh. Take an unforgettable, neo-gothic journey, and expand your poetic horizons.
