Lucid and short - a great introduction, April 20, 2004
This review is from: Intro Work Marcel Mauss (Paperback)
Often overlooked in shadow of his other works this book is Levi-Strauss at his best. Unlike some of his other works it's written very concise and simple and should be comprehensible even to those who are not experts in the field.
Marcel Mauss was probably one single anthropologist who influenced Levi-Strauss the most. Apart from being an excellent introduction to his work, Levi-Strauss uses the opportunity to further elaborate some of his own theories on human society and thought.
You will find in this book for example a sociological theory of insanity and a theory of mana as an empty signifier which only means the meaning itself, so this book can serve you as a companion to Foucault, Lacan and other structuralists as well.
I reccommend this book to anyone interested in human sciences.
