Editorial Reviews

From the Author

We hope you enjoy these gentle stories, designed to spark your preschoolers imaginations, help begin developing their problem-solving abilities, and provide family together time.

We firmly believe that your time is the best gift you can give children.  It's like making a deposit into their memory banks.

Since great things have come from people who have been able to imagine, think and create the impossible, it's never too early to begin working on developing these attributes in your children. We'd like to think our stories can help.

Because children need problems to solve, not answers to remember, we've included several discussion points in each story - the perfect way to begin a dialog and keep the lines of communication open, while developing their problem-solving abilities.

Reading to your children is a great way to combine learning and play.  You really are your child's favorite toy. So cozy up in bed, fire up your Kindle, and get started. And be sure to visit our companion web site - checkythebear.com.  There, your children can visit with Checky and see and learn all about his friends and everyone he meets in his stories.

About the Author

It has been said... a second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.  Maurie and Nancy Nordstrom proved this true when they married on a hilltop overlooking the City of Boston in 2000.  Five daughters, two sons, four spouses, three grandsons and two granddaughters make up their blended family.  Along with family fun, they both love to garden, spending a lot of time wrestling with rocks and boulders on their property in Southern New Hampshire. Maurie and Nancy also love to travel and as confirmed Anglophiles, finally fulfilled a long-time desire to visit England, spending four weeks there in 2010.

Maurie is a long-time teddy bear collector, decorating their home in "Early Teddy Bear" to the delight of their grandchildren.  He is an entertaining story teller, and some of the tales in this series have their roots in stories he told his children when they were young. Maurie is a voracious reader, especially interested in World War II history, and loves to putter, thinking up new ways to make things better.

Nancy is the author of "Learning Later, Living Greater: The Secret for Making the Most of Your After-50 Years," published by Sentient Publications in Boulder, CO.  She also directs a national network of 400 lifelong learning programs for older adults. In her spare time Nancy keeps the home fires burning, loves cozy mystery stories, and crochets baby blankets for local shelters.

"Checky's Magical Adventures" are a direct result of Maurie and Nancy's day-to-day dealings with their mischievous bed-bear, Checky, and all his friends.

More About the Author

Nancy Merz Nordstrom, and her husband Maurie Nordstrom, are the authors of a new series of gentle E-stories for preschoolers. "Checky's Magical Adventures," encourage parents to take a step back in time and return to the magical world of their own childhoods. Now they can share with their preschoolers the same type of gentle, cozy stories that were read to them as children. These family-centered, feel good adventures about a little girl and her magical, mischievous teddy bear will transport young children into a special world that sparks their imaginations and builds memories that will last forever. Be sure to visit their companion web site - www.checkythebear.com.

Nancy is also the author of "Learning Later, Living Greater: The Secret for Making the Most of Your After-50 Years," published by Sentient Publications, Boulder, Colorado.

"Learning Later, Living Greater" introduces readers to the ideas and benefits of later-life learning. It challenges people to become involved in meaningful new avenues of productivity: learning for the sheer joy of learning something new, educational travel, volunteerism, civic action, and more. It shows them how to stay mentally and spiritually young. "Learning Later, Living Greater" is the guidebook for transforming the after-work years into a richly satisfying period of personal growth and social involvement.

Nancy also directs the Elderhostel Institute Network, North America's largest educational organization for older adults with over 150,000 members. In this position she counsels new programs, provides resources to established programs, and facilitates communication among more than 400 lifelong learning programs across the U.S. and Canada.

As a speaker, she gives presentations, workshops and courses that speak to later life enrichment and satisfaction, using the tools of learning, exploring and serving. As an expert she is often interviewed by scholars, writers and the media (newspapers, radio, TV) about this subject.

Nancy also blogs and writes columns for several online sites that focus on adults over the age of 50. She maintains a web site at www.learninglater.com that provides information for the general public, and she can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

A dedicated lifelong learner, Nancy returned to school after the unexpected death of her first husband, and at age 53, earned an M.Ed. in Adult Education. As a later-life student she became aware of the opportunities and challenges facing older adults, and has dedicated herself to the belief that lifelong learning is both empowering and life-affirming, regardless of age.

Now, thanks to co-authoring the series "Checky's Magical Adventures" with her husband, Nancy is living her philosophy of continuing to learn throughout the lifespan.
