4.0 out of 5 stars Penny Dreadnought December 13, 2011

I purchased this collection because I am a big fan of James Everington, one of the authors featured within.
Unfortunately, I have already read his contribution "First Time Buyers" because it was included in a previous collection. (I very much enjoyed this story and I did review the collection in which it appeared, The Other Room.)
So three stories remain:

Lillies- by Iain Rowan- was a different take on reanimation. This is not a zombie short by any means. It is a unique and poignant read.

Cargo-by Aaron Polson-This was also a unique story. There was no punch at the end though, this one was very subtle.

Lastly, Invasion of the Shark-Men- by Alan Ryker. This was my favorite in this collection (sorry Mr. Everington!). Not only was this story unique, it was told in a fascinating way: through the videos of a friend who had since disappeared. It was realistic, different and chilling. LOVED IT!

I think the cover of this collection is excellent as well. It puts one right into the proper state of mind for the stories to follow.

So what I am left wondering is, will this be a continuing series? The introduction leads to me believe that it will. If so, I would like to know when I can expect the next installment? Please don't make me wait too long!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Collection of Stories! July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
While each of these stories is unique in writing style, they are all rich in imagery and emotion.

Lillies by Iain Rowan is an eloquent look at life and death, war, and each society's commitment to tradition.

Cargo by Aaron Polson, in many ways, was the most subtle of the four stories. Here we see human tragedy through one man's eyes. We experience how it changes the community, their view of this man, and the man himself.

First Time Buyers by James Everington is a vivid and haunting tale that looks at how fear can seep in and change us.

Invasion of the Shark-Men by Alan Ryker is a fascinating story that examines how a person's perspective alters how we see and experience the world we live in.

Overall, I found the stories compelling and was happily immersed in each author's fictional world.

For the price you can't really go wrong with this little collection of shorts. You can't buy a horror mag that features short stories anywhere else for this price. My favorite was probably "First Time Buyers" by James Everington with "Invasion of the Shark-Men" by Alan Ryker coming in at a close second. The other stories were interesting enough, but didn't have the punch that these two had. It piqued my interest enough to buy the second issue, which I'm sure I'll enjoy just as much as I did this one.
