Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book serves both as a general introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) and as a manual for a variety of functions of the ArcGIS Desktop applications. The exercises are full of useful, valuable hints and tricks that are not always found in other manuals and handbooks." (The Professional Geographer, May 2008)

"This practical step-by-step approach is actually very successful… I can recommend this book as an excellent reference…"  (Journal Of Sedimentary Research, May 2007) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

Introducing Geographic Information Systems with ArcGIS

A unique approach to learning and teaching GIS, updated for ArcGIS 9.3

Introducing Geographic Information Systems with ArcGIS, Second Edition serves as both an easy-to-understand introduction to GIS and a hands-on manual for the ArcGIS 9.3 software. This combination theory-workbook approach is designed to quickly bring the reader from GIS neophyte to well-informed GIS user from both a general knowledge and practical viewpoint.

Replacing the traditional separate texts on theory and application, the book integrates a broad introduction to GIS with a software-specific workbook for ESRIs ArcGIS in a single comprehensive volume.?Easy to read, interesting, and at times quite amusing, the new edition is even more accessible to a wide variety of readers.

Each chapter presents two mutually supporting sections:

Overview- a discussion of theory and ideas relating to GIS, laying the groundwork for spatial analysis

Step-by-step instructions on how to use ArcGIS software. There are sixty exercises and nine review exercises throughout the book, covering most of the topics students need to gain GIS jobs or continue work in GIS or GIScience

Complete with a CD-ROM containing data for working out all of the exercises, this Second Edition provides an updated examination of file geodatabases including vector, raster, and 3D GIS with terrains. On completion of this text, students will have acquired in-depth understanding of GIS theory and how to operate the ArcGIS software. They will have been exposed, through additional hands-on demonstrations, to virtually everything about GIS that supports spatial analysis.

Written by an author with over thirty years of experience writing software manuals, Introducing Geographic Information Systems with ArcGIS, Second Edition puts readers on the quick road to mastery of GIS.

I purchased this book to help me with an Intro to GIS course. The book is very detailed in it's presentation of how to use ArcCatalog and ArcMap. At times, however, it seems that the author wrote it for someone who'd never turned on a computer. I found the first 150 pages to be extremely boring. Other times, my ArcMap 9.3 didn't match up with his step by step instructions and I had use my instructor as a resource to figure out how to complete the exercise. Overall it's a well written book but the mismatched instructions cause me to give it a 4 star rating.

There are other books around on the subject, I don't know them all, but after going through this book, I don't think I need to. Very good approach at learning this very complicated GIS software.

With the distribution of ArcGIS 10, this book (and the exercises therein) must be treated as "reference material for GIS concepts". Although this is a concern for anyone dealing with upgraded programs, it seems especially severe in Esri's transition from 9.3 to 10. I'm sure this book was great "at the time"; unfortunately, the time has passed.

Great Book, has everything for an introduction, the only low point is that some topics are treated very short (one page), but well, for an introductory book is enough. ;-)
