Editorial Reviews

2008 collection, the perfect introduction to this Jazz icon's highly-respected catalog. Saxophonist Hank Crawford began his musical career in Ray Charles' band from 1958, and remained with them- becoming their musical director - until 1963. From 1960 he recorded some ten albums for Atlantic as a bandleader, and his association with the label was to last an entire decade, until he signed to Kudu in 1971. His soulful playing, rooted in blues, still sounds as fresh today as it did at the time. Rhino UK.

When you hear a fine sax player on the street, blowing his heart out for coins, this is what they are emulating or aspiring to. Hank Crawford was one of the bluesiest, soul jazz players ever. This was before the 70's, when he was a bit overshadowed by Grover Washington. (In fact when Hank Crawford couldn't make it to a Creed Taylor recording date for "Inner City Blues", Washington sat-in the session instead. "Inner City Blues" became a big hit.) However, Hank Crawford was a master in his own right. This collection focuses mainly on his early 1960's output; a master in his early 30's. The mellow tunes are very heartfelt, and the swinging tunes are great - a very clean recording, as well. A great introduction to Hank Crawford - and well before the advent of smooth jazz banalities.
