A Virtuoso Among Virtuosos,
This review is from: Introducing Johnny Griffin (Audio CD)
This is Johnny in his prime: tenor saxophone played with raw power, speed, and excitement. For several decades, if you were talking bebop, you just couldn't beat The Little Giant on tenor. He was incredibly fast, accurate, inventive, and above all joyful. Check out the cuts "Mil-Dew" and "The Way You Look Tonight" for state-of-the-art take-no-prisoners playing.

Why the cut?,

I own the previous release by Blue Note of this CD (in 16 bits ONLY, mind you, but I must be deaf as I can't hear the difference). All this to say that the sound quality doesn't alter the fantastic performance. This is Griffin during his early years, at his best. As a big fan of max Roach, I am happy that this recording demonstrates his ability as "just" a side musician setting the pace. This being said to counter those who think he is only a soloist. 4 1/2 stars as perfection isn't of this world. Now, why, please tell me why, were "The way you look tonight" and "Cherokee" deleted on this release as compared the previous CD and LP releases? Beats me! Interestingly, there is no reference to this release (nor the previous ones) on Blue Note's site...
