Format: Audio CD
Mamane Barka, from Niger, plays an old and rare musical instrument on this album - the biram, a five-string harp. So rare is the instrument, that Mamane Barka, who learnt from an old master (now deceased), was effectively the only master of the instrument alive. The album combines the biram with percussion and songs in local languages from Niger. There are only two musicians playing on the album, so it is a fairly sparse sound, but the biram and the percussion work well together.
The album is just short of an hour long and a pleasant listen, despite being a little repetitive in spots. If you like west African "desert blues" music, or are just interested in listening to a rare and traditional stringed instrument, you may enjoy this.
