This book does an excellent job of self learning this program.

If you like to get frustrated and confused this is the book for you. I've worked with many graphics software books and programming books and they are often not easy to get through but this one is probably the worst I've dealt with yet. The diagrams for the steps you follow are in grey, with no color, often times small and with very little contrast. Sometimes the book will reference certain features of a project that are thin lines, and the diagram you are supposed to use as a guide will show several of these features, all in shades of grey and with so little contrast that you can't tell which ones you are supposed to work with. The instructions are often very vague, skip steps, and leave you resorting to web tutorials to find out what you are supposed to be doing. I have this book as text for a class and everyone in the class has trouble with it, including several experienced graphics professionals. Maya is a huge and intimidating application and learning it is difficult but also fun but this book makes it frustrating and irritating.

The book starts of in a very good manner it introduces the layout, the way things are done and the production process very well. As the book progresses it explains the various use of the tools and helps you build a lot of things. Dariush Derakhshani did a very good job explaining the steps to creating the projects but at certain complex points of the projects ex: modeling a cabin for the train project etc.. the book does not give enough information for a beginner to understand it. Although this happens rarely throughout the book it can get you frustrated enough to give up on it even if you think it is to encourage you to learn it yourself. Its also good to NOTE THAT THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN A LOT THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. Overall if you are willing to learn Maya from the scratch this book is a must have as it will introduce you to most of the basic and advanced concepts.

I've been looking into learning 3D software (I dabbled in Truespace years ago). I finally settled on Maya since it's used in the TV/Film industry.

This book does an excellent job of self learning this program. The author has you jump in by building a solar system and explains each step thoroughly and clearly. He also teaches you the long way before showing some of the numerous shortcuts this program has. I've already completed the first lesson and was surprised how efficiently the book showed me to build a solar system with rotating and revolving planets, moons, and the sun. Very fun, easy, and informative!

The book also has enough pictures to show you examples of what you should be seeing (b&w only though). This included the almost overwhelming menu commands and windows you'll be dealing with. This is very important! So many other books don't show you where all the menu commands are which can leave you lost at times (particularly if your using a different version). No problems here.

Definitely give this book a try if you're interested in Maya or looking for secondary book to complement school.

This is a good Maya primer but the lessons can get frustrating at times. The author fails to give more detail on procedures you must follow during the exercises and you end up wasting time figuring things out by yourself. I ended giving up on following the exercises and will skim through it when I'll find something of interest I want to learn about.
However, the polygon modeling lessons are a good start for beginners like myself. With the little I learned I can manage modeling some basic objects.
I'm also dropping one star due to the poor binding otherwise I would have rated it four stars.

I purchased this book for use with an introductory animation class. It walks you through all the important features of the software. (Spoiler: Nothing substantial has changed about the software since this book was published, so this will work just as well as "Introducing Maya 2013" or whatever yearly edition the publishers see fit to release). It covers a wide variety of topics in one volume, allowing you to focus on areas of personal interest.

However, the content is presented in a disorderly and unhelpful way. In particular, the book references detail-oriented, color-differentiated features of Maya. The diagrams are tiny, and entirely black and white! So, I faced some problems when the book asked me to select "these 4 points," and presented a screenshot slice where all the points looked exactly the same. I experienced this all the time, where the diagram purported to show selected versus non-selected components, but the two types looked exactly the same. SO WHICH ONES DO I SELECT? I've spent at least 2 hours on these trivial issues, because you can't move forward in the lessons unless you're working on the right components. I ultimately rely on random help forums, and a bit of blind luck to achieve the desired results.

The book also expects you to read every single sentence and do every single lesson in sequential order, or you will be out of the loop on essential interface features. For example, the book tells you to "Open Hypershade" and quickly moves onto the next operation. If you're not sure where to find the Hypershade window, the book leaves you on your own. You are thus left to poke around the Maya interface, which is often unintuitive and lacks tooltips in key places. That must be the book's way of encouraging exploration?
