About the Author

DONALD RICHIE, who has for four decades made Tokyo his home, writes widely on Japanese culture and society. Formerly Curator of Film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he is the recognized Western authority on Japanese film and author of such standard works as The Japanese Film, Ozu, and The Films of Akira Kurosawa. See also his A Hundred Years of Japanese Films.In addition he has written many books on other aspects of the country and its people: A Taste of Japan, Zen Inklings, The Japanese Tattoo, and Different People. In 1993, the Tokyo metropolitan government conferred upon him its Cultural Award.

BEN SIMMONS is a freelance photographer based in Tokyo. Before going to Japan, he taught creative photography at the progressive Penland School in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. You can find all kinds of information on Tokyo in books, from sections full of text and no pictures in lengthy guidebooks to books devoted exclusively to Tokyo. However, in planning for my trip to Japan, I found it really hard to get my bearings with respect to the city. Finally, I sat down with Introducing Tokyo and the Tokyo City Atlas and by reading section by section and looking for the sections of Tokyo in the atlas, I was finally able to get a sense of what's what and what's where in the city.

The book is large format - maybe 12 by 9 inches, and perhaps 20 to 25% text and the rest pictures. It has six major sections and covers six major sections of Tokyo. It just gives and overview and photographs from each section. It's not intended as a guidebook, but it's a great place to start before poring through your guidebooks. The photos are good, and I enjoyed the writing style.
