Book Description

June 2003
UPDATED AND REVISED! Here’s the all-new, 3rd edition of Wall Street’s famous "green book" for new analysts. Matchett’s practical workbook is a learning tool – not a textbook. You learn the streamlined accounting that financial analysts need to understand and value companies correctly.

· Less about T-accounts, more about understanding financial statements and ratio analysis.
· Full of exercises and self-tests.
· Appendices include extra exercises on cash flow statement construction and debits and credits.
· A separate supplement includes a real company’s annual report (referred to in some of the exercises) and answers to all exercises.

About the Author

Even the deadliest accounting subjects become lively and fun when Alastair Matchett is teaching finance professionals. In addition to financial statement analysis and leveraged valuation, Matchett teaches corporate finance and modeling to all skill levels, from entering analysts to directors.

Matchett started his finance career at JP Morgan’s London advisory unit after attending the internationally renowned Morgan Finance Program in New York. He also helped design and manage training for the bank. Matchett went on to manage a portfolio of private equity investments for Investors in Industry and negotiate equity financing for leveraged buyouts.

In 1997 Matchett co-founded Adkins Matchett & Toy to provide leading-edge materials and instructional services to global investment banks and financial institutions. Since then he has designed complete training programs for both analyst and associate entry classes major investment banks on Wall Street and in the City of London.

In 2002 Matchett became CEO and principal owner of The Matchett Group, based in the UK. AMT now offers training in business skills as well as learning management services through John Matchett Limited, an affiliate of The Matchett Group.

Alastair Matchett received a 2i in Economics and Politics from Bristol University and went on to receive an MSc in Foreign Policy and Domestic Politics (his thesis was awarded a distinction). 5.0 out of 5 stars Unique!!! A must have for young Analysts!!!, July 17, 2007

This review is from: Introduction to Accounting for Finance, Third Edition (Paperback)
This book is excellent, basic and for beginners, especially for young people intending to go in for a career in the investment banking industry (M&A / ECM)!!!! A superb introduction on accounting!!! Easy and fun to read! Even excellent as a review! There are not many books that can compete with the Accounting introduction by AMT - as a German citizen I have to add that there is no!!! German book available explaining accounting in such an easy, logic and structured way as this one!!! German accounting books are in general more academic, boring and punishing reads - good to pass your exams but poor to get a comprehensive and essential understanding on what accounting really is about (in practical terms)!!! Easy language, good and logical structure, explains all the important connections between p&l, balance sheet and cash-flow statement while every chapter is finished off with exercises for review.
As I didn't learn the ropes with one of the bulge brackets and didn't attend any boot camp, I had to do a lot of self study on accounting, financial analysis and modelling. I almost bought a complete shelf of books covering these subjects. That's why I am now - after being in this industry for a couple of years - able to strongly recommend this book to everybody who wants to save time and money spending it on books which don't prove to be of use at the end of the day. Further good reads are "Build business spread sheets" by AMT (introduction on modelling) and all the "midnight manuals" also issued by AMT!!!
