Book Description

The study of AGN is one of the most dynamic areas of contemporary astronomy, involving one-fifth of all research astronomers. This textbook provides a systematic review of the observed properties of AGN across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, examines the underlying physics, and shows how the brightest AGN--quasars--can be used to probe the farthest reaches of the Universe. This timely textbook is a clear, comprehensive and self-contained introduction to active galactic nuclei (AGN)--for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in astronomy and physics.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...this well-written text provides an excellent introduction to a stimulating field, and conclusively answers the question: Why study AGN? I would highly recommend it to students and researchers alike." Michael De Robertis, Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada

Book Description

At least one galaxy in every hundred has a core so bright it outshines the ten thousand million stars that make up rest of the galaxy. The study of these 'active galactic nuclei' (AGN) is one of the most dynamic areas of contemporary astronomy, involving one fifth of all research astronomers. This textbook provides a clear, comprehensive and self-contained introduction to AGN for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in astronomy and physics. It presents a systematic review of the observed properties of AGN across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, examines the underlying physics, and shows how the brightest AGN, quasars, can be used to probe the Universe. It serves as an entry point to the research literature and an invaluable reference for researchers in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes AGN interesting..., December 1, 2007
By
Astroceltica (Boulder, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei (Paperback)
This is an excellent book on the topic. Bradley Peterson works in the field and actively seeks to promote understanding of AGN through his book and lectures. The book provides detailed descriptions of what astronomers observe when they examine AGN and then goes on to develop what physics can be gleaned from those observations. The mathematical proofs start off simple enough and then are well-developed to allow for a solid understanding of the physics. This textbook is better up to date than some of its competitors and gives the reader insight as to what the current controversies and unresolved questions are in the field.

This text makes AGN accessible to the reader and is presented in a clear way, so that when you are finished, you will be interested to look up papers on the topic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Observers look on AGN, February 8, 2007
This review is from: An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei (Paperback)
I'm using this text for my course on accretion power in AGN and till now have found the book to be extremely useful. However the author does seem to gloss over many of the derivations where an in depth look might have been preferred. Definitely a useful book to have if your studying AGN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Introduction, July 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei (Paperback)
This is one of those rare science textbooks that one can read in leisure, sitting down for a few hours, and actually understand most of the material. The order is rational, it is however missing a few of the more recent developments.
