Book Description

0205331297 978-0205331291 May 24, 2003 1

There has been recent attention given to overcome the gulf between the treatment of alcoholism and research on alcoholism. This book is a practical step to “bridge the gap”. There is a great body of useful research on alcohol and alcoholism, which has been conducted in the past 25 years. This book includes this research for important contributions to the understanding of alcoholism and treatment.

This book gives the reader an introduction to research methods and other knowledge bases, while discussing current alcohol research and suggests clinical applications. Each subsequent chapter focuses on a specific variable and its methodology.

You have a nice ability of taking difficult concepts and presenting
them clearly and in an interesting manner. I like it since it addresses topics that are not found in other texts and plan to put it as a recommended reading for my students.

“Introduction to Alcohol Research: Implications for Treatment, Prevention, and Policy offers an objective summary of alcohol research, the positive and negative consequences of alcohol consumption, and the causes and effective treatment of alcohol disorders. The text's unique design includes more research studies on alcohol than any other single volume, giving readers a broad understanding of alcohol research and its implications. Yalisove's pedagogical approach bridges the gap between the clinical and research worlds by reaching out to both communities. The research material he cites can be utilized in clinical practices, while also providing a forum to discuss future research possibilities. Introduction to Alcohol Research presents readers with their first opportunity for a comprehensive, unbiased study of alcohol and alcohol disorders.”

"Daniel,

We met a few months ago at the AMERSA conference, at which time you kindly gave me a copy of your text.  I read much of it a few days ago while traveling and wanted to tell you how impressed I was.   You really did a fine job reviewing the relevant literature.  Your text is a unique contribution to the field - I hope it does very well."

"Introduction to Alcohol Research: Implications for Treatment, Prevention,
and Policy", provides a wealth of invaluable information for forensic mental
health experts and attorneys.  Even those with backgrounds in alcohol abuse,
will find this comprehensive volume to be a major source of reference when
addressing a range of psycho-legal issues involving claims of intoxication.
Cases involving the effects of alcohol on criminal responsibility and
decision-making, its relationship to claimed torts in personal  injury
cases, and the general effects of alcohol at various levels of intoxication
are considered.  This text describes why alcohol has a profound effect on
physical and cognitive functioning and it included valuable information
regarding the use of alcohol by various demographic groups -- information
frequently focused on in legal cases."

This review is from: Introduction to Alcohol Research: Implications for Treatment, Prevention, and Policy (Paperback)
This book is accurate, filled with citations, timely, research based, very readable, and above all concise. When I first picked up this book, I said to myself that here are the lectures that I had to create for my intro to alcohol class, all together in one easy to use format. The author has a study guide for the text and essay questions which can be readily obtained from him via email. I have been impressed at how well my students have done in my class since switching to this text.
