Book Description

January 17, 1994 0275947203 978-0275947200

This book is for students taking either a first-year graduate statistics course or an advanced undergraduate statistics course in Psychology. Enough introductory statistics is briefly reviewed to bring everyone up to speed. The book is highly user-friendly without sacrificing rigor, not only in anticipating students' questions, but also in paying attention to the introduction of new methods and notation. In addition, many topics given only casual or superficial treatment are elaborated here, such as: the nature of interaction and its interpretation, in terms of theory and response scale transformations; generalized forms of analysis of covariance; extensive coverage of multiple comparison methods; coverage of nonorthogonal designs; and discussion of functional measurement. The text is structured for reading in multiple passes of increasing depth; for the student who desires deeper understanding, there are optional sections; for the student who is or becomes proficient in matrix algebra, there are still deeper optional sections. The book is also equipped with an excellent set of class-tested exercises and answers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, Graphically Inferior, and Riddled with Errors, January 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: An Introduction to the Analysis of Variance (Hardcover)
This text was used in my introductory statistics class and we felt it was the most confusing, poorly written, error-ridden text we have ever seen. There is nothing so frustrating as spending two hours completing sample questions only to find that the answers in the back were incorrect. It was a waste of time. There is little to no practical aspects of the text, and it is written for an audience I trust is out of contact with reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take "A reader"'s January 2000 review with a grain of salt, this book is good for ADVANCED stats, not INTRODUCTORY, April 6, 2007
This review is from: An Introduction to the Analysis of Variance (Hardcover)
Take "A reader's" January 2000 person's review (the first review) with a grain of salt. The reviewer starts off saying this book was used in an INTRODUCTORY statistics course, and then complains it was too confusing. This book is NOT meant for intro stats, but for more advanced courses. This is an introduction to the Analysis of Variance, NOT an introduction to statistics. ANOVA is something that is merely touched upon in an introductory statistics book, so complaining about the book being "poorly written" and "error-ridden" when the reviewer should have NO KNOWLEDGE about ANOVA should be taken into consideration.

Having that in mind, this book does a good job of teaching the fundamentals of how ANOVA works geometrically. This book was not written "for an audience I trust is out of contact with reality," but for students studying more advanced statistics. I used this book while in graduate school in conjunction with another ANOVA text and found this one to be much for clear and thorough. All the complaints "A reader" brings up seem steam from a professor choosing the wrong book for a course, NOT THE BOOK ITSELF. This is an excellent text, even if it is over 10 years old. Pick it for the right class and you'll enjoy it fully.
