"One of the features I like about the Hauer and Young text is its attempt to bring the values and ethics of the Bible into the contemporary world through discussion questions. The questions are typically open-ended enough that any student can relate to them... and they allow students to realize that not everyone who reads the Bible understands its message in the same way." Naomi Steinberg, DePaul University
"The text's three-world approach is a clear and accessible critical methodology for introducing students to the critical study of religious texts .... It balances the critical scholarship well with the more immediate practical and contemporary concerns of the typical undergraduate student. It does not get bogged down in exegesis, but neither does it merely summarize the Bible as others do. It occupies the perfect middle position ...." Jeffrey W. Robbins, Lebanon Valley College
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.Designed for readers who have had limited or no exposure to the academic study of the Bible, An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds explores the literary, historical, and contemporary "worlds" of the Bible. These include 1) the Biblical text itself (literary world); 2) the contexts in which the Bible was originally written and interpreted (historical world); and 3) the many ways in which the Bible continues to influence people in the twenty-first century (contemporary world). Christian Hauer and William Young's distinctive approach has led students for almost twenty years to appreciate the richness of meaning and interpretation in the history of Biblical scholarship. The text features a full chapter on Jewish life and literature between 200 B.C.E. and 100 C.E., including a discussion of books of the Deuterocanon (Apocrypha), and demonstrates the continuing role of the Bible in religion, politics, art, literature, and music.

Not Recommended as a Textbook,

This review is from: An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds, 7th Edition (Paperback)
I adopted Introduction to the Bible as my textbook for a 100-level Bible survey course at a four-year liberal arts college, and I have been sorely disappointed. While the content is generally sound and the approach and coverage suitable for the course, the price is absurdly high for what you get (even with Amazon's generous discount). There are no additional resources for instructors, and the book's design is aesthetically uninviting, which makes it all the more difficult to get students to do the reading.

If you want a good beggining to the historical bible, this will not lead you astray. Full of useful information and unbiased in it's approach, by far the best book of it's kind that I have come across.
