Editorial Reviews

Moria and Kami bring together two very different dances from India, one Modern Fusion and another classical temple, to combine with the intensity and fun of Tribal Fusion Bellydance. Odissi Indian Temple Dance is a multi-thousand year old dance form that has been passed down from guru to student for generations. Preserved through hundreds of statues decorating the walls of sacred sites throughout Eastern India, Odissi's precise form celebrates the sacred feminine and evokes the divine.
In this DVD Moria Chappell introduces you to some of the footwork, mudras, and temple poses that are a part of this vast art form. She combines the look and moves of this ancient Indian dance with Tribal Fusion Bellydance to present a fun intermediate level Odissi Indian Fusion Tribal Bellydance Choreography. You will experience how these two very different dance styles are bound by the same urgency of expression: strength in feminine devotion. The DVD also includes a moon salutation yoga warm-up and cool-down.

I was not impressed by this one. It starts with Kami's dance. There was very little Bollywood/Indian movements in it and not good instructions. This type of teaching is "I'll show you the moves and you should just be able to do it".

Moria's section is better she explains the story behind her dance. Her facial expressions don't work for this type of dance though. I have watched a lot of Indian dancing and she just doesn't have it yet. I realize it's a melding of the two types of dance and maybe this is how she wants it to look. But to me it just looks like she's scared or struggling with the facial expressions. FYI - facial expressions are a HUGE part of Indian dance.

I had high hopes for this DVD after going to BDSS's fantastic Bombay Bellywood show and taking some workshops with the performers. Bellywood fusion is so popular in belly dance right now, and I'm very happy that BDSS has addressed this niche with the Bombay Bellywood DVD. But this DVD is just not user friendly in any way!

The DVD says that the choreographies taught by Kami and Moria are "intermediate" level---and they are NOT kidding about that! I realize that the terms "beginner," "intermediate," and "advanced" are all relative depending on one's background, but in my opinion the instruction on this DVD is most definitely advanced level. There really isn't much explanation when it comes to the instructional sections. And, complicating things even further, Moria and Kami both blaze through the teaching sections pretty quickly.

There are so many intricacies and interesting stories behind Bhangra moves and Odissi postures and mudras, and I'm really disappointed that neither performer went into any detail about the origins and proper technique of these subjects. (In fact, the Kami section had ZERO explanation of Bhangra. At least Moria's section of the DVD included an introduction with some explanation about Odissi's origins. The omission of any intro from Kami just feels like a production mistake.)

I can deal with the fact that the choreography on this DVD is hard and that it is taught quickly. After all, it's a DVD: I can fast forward, rewind and practice it as much as I want. But what I cannot seem to get over is the lack of detail regarding Indian dance traditions. One of the things I enjoyed so much about taking a live workshop with Moria is that she is so knowledgeable and passionate about Odissi.

Although the title says "Introduction" its not. Ok..well it could be if your new to Indian dance, but its not easy.Indian dance ins't easy . And you need to have a background in Tribal Bellydance. I like the idea of a dvd that's not easy! Most of the dvds out there for dancers are for beginners and I like some that are more challenging. This dvd is fast paced. You need to be quick.. have good memory .. muscle memory; and ofcourse hit the rewind button several time... but that the cool thing of learning from a dvd lol!. Odissi is a very complex dance.... you need time and practice... and devotion... thats what its mostly about! Take your time.. enjoy the process of learning the moves... it probable will take you some sessions. I like this dvd alot !!!
