Capital Markets,
By A Customer
This review is from: An Introduction to Capital Markets: Products, Strategies, Participants (The Wiley Finance Series) (Hardcover)
An extremely clearly written introduction to financial markets. I learned a lot. I recommend reading this before tackling something like John Hull's book on derivatives. It would be very useful for people joining an investment bank or for college/MBA students interested in finance.

This book is one of the best introductions to an area that grows in complexity. It explains the various types of equities and how they are used. It covers the mathematical aspect of equities that even a non-mathematician would find absorbing, although and I hate to say this, mathematical purists would not find it rigourous enough. This book goes a long way to demystifying an increasingly important part of world finance. A good read for both investors and laymen alike.

This is an excellent comprehensive introduction to capital markets. It is very clearly written with a lot of practical examples and case studies. I particularly like the fact that the book covers a wide range of debt and equity cash and derivative products. It is less mathematical than a book like Hull and a very good complement to it.

This review is from: An Introduction to Capital Markets: Products, Strategies, Participants (The Wiley Finance Series) (Hardcover)
This book covers a broad range of contemporary financial markets in less than 400 pages. The author states upfront that he has taught courses on this subject for years, and it really shows. His explanations are crystal clear, and the markets are presented in a very logical order and from a global prespective. In addition, the text is filled with many examples and case studies that really aid in understanding. There are plenty of formulas in this book, but the level of mathematical sophisticiation never goes beyond algbra.Downsides? A bit dated and -- for the American reader -- written in British English with many of the examples in sterling. Personally, I felt this gave the book a more global flavor (or flavour) which seemed fitting given the topic. A last note, Amazon has the page count wrong. Even with glossary, this book is less than 450 pages. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in global finance either with an eye towards trading financial instruments or just to better understanded the complicated underpinnings of the modern global financial system. An excellent book.

This review is from: An Introduction to Capital Markets: Products, Strategies, Participants (The Wiley Finance Series) (Hardcover)
A nice description of the equity and debt markets written for a bright college student who wants to understand financial jargon and capital products. There is considerable overlap with his paperback book, Derivatives Demystified, also part of the Wiley Finance series. I have used this latter book in a course at Yale Law School, and I think the students both enjoyed it and profited from it. The Capital Markets book (in hardback) is more comprehensive and broader in scope but retains the same clarity of presentation. I could quibble with a point here or a bit of emphasis there, but overall each book does a very good job. Nice use of charts, graphs, and tables.

I am new to using this amazon but I may not use it again. I use ebay where I have a great rating, but I ordered this book in august, and thy just shipped it, my class is over I want a refund, I bought the book elsewhere, but its impossible to get any help here. I'd suggest going to ebay and buying it from a respected seller there, even if its a few dollars more.
