Book Description

August 1980 Library science text series
After 25 years of service, this professional text has been updated in line with developments in the field of library science. Since the seventh edition of this standard text was published in 1985, the have been changes in virtually every area of bibliographic control. "AACR2 Revised" (AACR2R) has been implemented; new editions of or supplements to LCSH, LC classification, and DDC, and "Sears" have appeared; OCLC has adopted the PRISM format; and networking and online catalogues have become a way of life. Taylor addresses these and other changes in this edition. Consequently, many chapters of this text are entirely new, such as "Cataloguing in Context" and "Subject Arrangement of Library Materials", or fully revised such as "Development of Cataloguing Codes", which has been expanded to show the continuity in the development leading to publication of AACR2R. Two appendices have been added: an introduction to USMARC format and instructions for typing catalogue cards, including a detailed analysis of the puctuation and spacing to be used when conforming to the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD).

4.0 out of 5 stars A book for cataloguers, August 14, 2000
By A Customer
I found this book to be an extremely useful text. The coverage is comprehensive, dealing with the principles of cataloguing, development of cataloguing codes, description and access, subject analysis and organization. It explains and simplifies the AACR2 rules. A very useful feature is the linking of the ISBD elements to the related MARC fields/subfields. In addition, I appreciate the visual clarification of the content and formatting rules that is provided by the abundant examples and figures depicting bibliographic records in card and MARC format. As a cataloguer and trainer, I keep a copy of this text along with the other tools which I consult regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classification, February 23, 2005
I like this book because it is reasonably easy to follow.
As a cataloguer I find it clearfies confusion and mistakes people make.

Cataloging and classfications are not very straight forward and by reading this book I learn more and more each time.

The glossary in the back is also very helpful. Marc classifications are very sophisticated. One either does it right or messed it up. This is the kind of book that is a must for all librarians and dotcom indexers.

The downside is the book need to include more modern topics and more foreign language cataloging..... Also new technology indexing methods need to be at least introduced.......
