Book Description

This book teaches chemistry at an appropriate level of rigor while removing the confusion and insecurity that impairs success. Prep chem frequently intimidates people; Bishop's text shows them how to break the material down and master it. The system of objectives tells readers exactly what they must learn in each chapter and where to find it. The text and superb illustrations provide a solid conceptual framework and address misconceptions. From that basis, readers learn to strategize problems and solve them in logical steps. The Examples and Exercises give plenty of confidence-building practice; the end-of-chapter problems test the reader's mastery. For college instructors and students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best intro to Chemistry book--hands down! Science AND Non-Sci students, August 8, 2010
By
KD Allen "me" (SRQ, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Introduction to Chemistry (Paperback)
This is a phenomenal book which can be ordered in one of two formats--with the "chemistry" part first, and the math in the second half of the book, or with the math intertwined, early on in the book. Written so ANYBODY with the ability to read above 6th grade level can understand.

Mark Bishop has done a great service to many chemistry students by writing this book. As a Chemistry professor he saw that his students were oftentimes unable to relate the chemical part of the subject to the math part of the subject; an asute observation, because so many students just memorize the formulas without knowing why they are doing what they are doing (just gritting their teeth to get through the course). He figured that if he began the text with the explanations of elements, solutions, reactions, etc (all the "fun" stuff) the student would have a better basis for understanding the relevance of all the math involved in chemistry. He is right.

The bonus is that Mr. Bishop operates a FREE website that has fascinating animations where you can actually see graphic representations of atoms/molecules DOING things....moving around and behaving just as they do in real life. Here is the link: [...]

This textbook is just being discovered and used in colleges throughout the US, and it deserves wider recognition.

You can order this book (any variation) from his website, as well as DVDs, study guides, etc.

Thank you Mr. Bishop!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing clarity in presented material, August 7, 2010

Who Said What? "Skeptic" (Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Introduction to Chemistry (Paperback)
I have not actually read this text but assume it is the same text as on Mr. Bishop's website [...]. His "chemistry first" version hits all the major topics suitable for a high school chemistry class and no more. He does not pack the book with material the students will never master. What he covers he covers with lucid descriptions with very helpful examples, diagrams, and homework problems. I cannot understand why there have been no reviews of his work yet. I am seriously thinking of using his website that includes his text as well as an audio version of the text and numerous other resources instead of a traditional textbook. This text is only a portion of the amazing material that he offers.
