This book is the best overall introduction into the world of Cisco. The TCP/IP and OSI chapters are excellent and you WILL need them on the exam. It does lack in the areas of Frame Relay, ISDN, and LAN switching. It has plenty of screen shots and does a good job of explaining RIP and IGRP. If you are new to Cisco and are going to take the CCNA exam do not rely on Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guide alone. You will be doing yourself a disservice! It is comparable to reading an Exam Cram book. Why would anyone planning on working on Cisco routers read an Exam Cram as an intro to Cisco? CCNA is an entry level certification, so read yourself a real intro book and good luck.

The book for CCNA,

I have used Todd Lammle's book to pass the CCNA exam. However, Todd's book lacked explanation as to why things are the way they are. For example, the reason behind using the network command after typing in router rip, is not explained at all in Todd's book whereas in Laura's ICRC book, it breaks it down and explains clearly. After, I passed the exam, I reviewed and studied Laura's CCNA book and I can say that this book is better for giving you a solid foundation. Todd's book, altho very good, is maily for exam prep, whereas Laura's book is for UNDERSTANDING. If you had to choose between two books, I'll choose Laura's book because in long run understanding concepts and not memorizing will get you further.

If you are thinking about CCNA, this is THE book. I just passed my CCNA using only this ICRC book. I also use it everyday as a reference. Get it !

Put this book together with Lammle's CCNA Study Guide and you've got a winning combination for this exam. Chappell's book will do a better job of explaining router configuration. However it doesn't cover all of the exam objectives and hence there is a need for a second book. This book is good enough though to get the MCSETutor.com stamp of approval.

Hello...where is the section on LAN switches/brides/hubs? Not in this book. ISDN is also a bit too brief. I just passed the CCNA exam and there is an entire section titled "LAN switching". This book is great for understanding IP addressing (which I had a total of about 3 q's) , access lists/network security and is huge for the OSI model. Do not rely on this book alone to pass the exam. Take a class for hands on routing, buy this book and Todd Lammle's Study Guide, (not the big fat book), and you will pass no problem.

Last fall, I completed a required university course on advanced networking concepts. As a result I became interested in learning more about the Cisco family of products and certification paths. So, I purchased Laura Chappell's ICRC book after exploring Cisco's website.I finished reading it on Friday and I can honestly say that it is great! The material is well written, the 16 chapters are appropriately structured, and all information is highly informative. I discovered that most of the instructor-led, five-day courses follow the format of this book. You will learn about the internetworking model, network layer and path determination, router operations, IP addressing, and IP routing configuration. Also, the book covers configurations for Novell IPX, AppleTalk, X.25 377, frame relay, and a host of other related information. Buy it now!!!!!!!!! Della M.

I bought this book and learned so much. However, I failed the test as it doesn't cover all the material on the exam. I bough the Sybex CCNA Study Guide and passed the next test. I recommend the ICRC book, but I also highly recommend the Sybex CCNA book. I returned the Osborne CCNA book as it was a waste of time.

Because Cisco would not take the time to review this book it has changed what could have been the best book in the world to a confusing text of mumbo jumbo, especially to the novice. Here are a few of the errors. The Lammle book will get you to pass the exam - And make no mistake about it, it is MUCH easier to sift through. However, if you want to do very well (80% or more) you really should get this book! There are little quark questions that pop up on the test that are taken from this book.. word for word.. and are NOT covered in the other books. Remember, with cisco certification, the cisco way is the RIGHT way.. like it or not!
