Book Description

June 1994

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject of coastal zone management. The authors review the existing management framework at the federal, state, and local level, describing cornerstone federal programs and innovative and leading state, regional, and special area programs. Throughout, they focus on:

  • coastal ecology and the physical attributes of the coastal zone
  • population trends and growth pressures confronting coastal areas
  • policy issues and conflicts facing those in coastal management

In addition, they examine key elements of successful coastal management, as they identify deficiencies in current efforts as well as methods for addressing those deficiencies.

An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management provides a firm understanding of management approaches and strategies in use around the country, focusing on those that have proven most effective.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great intro, January 30, 2001

This review is from: An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management (Hardcover)
As a student of geography, I was given the opportunity to do some shoreline management work for the local county. Although I had taken some classes regarding shorelines, I needed a crash course in coastal management, and I was pointed to this book. Within two days, I knew as much as I needed to know about coastal issues.

The book covers a wide variety of issues, ranging from the history of coastal population concentration, environmental issues, private property rights, and zoning and other useful information for the planner. This book gave me a great introductory knowledge, and was able to satisfy most of my questions.

I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they may be interested in Shoreline Management, City or Urban Planning, or Environmental or Population issues.
