2.0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes with Applications, January 17, 2001

This review is from: An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes with Applications (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) (Hardcover)
Overall it is a well-organized book. It gives a basic understanding of the practical error-correcting codes and the mathatical principles that they rely on. It answers question like how digital information are transfer. My only reservation to totally recommending this book is the price. It is very expensive probably due to the volume they are able to sell. It is a book for senior undergraduate or possibly first year grad school so you won't see it as often as your 1st year Calculus Text. I also had a difficult time locating this book because the publisher print in low volume. So if you must buy this book, buy it early.

Table of Contents:

Introduction and Fundamentals, Finite Fields, Linear Codes, Some Special Linear Codes, Cyclic Codes, BCH Codes and Bounds for Cyclic Codes, Error Correction Techniques and Digital Audio Recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars a truly amazing introduction to ECCs..., April 20, 2005

This review is from: An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes with Applications (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) (Hardcover)
I was taught by one of the authors of this book (Vanstone) and greatly appreciated the book after the course. This book is a very solid introduction to ECCs which starts from very basic block codes (with simple generators) and develops/introduces the required abstract algebric theory which eventually lead to modern Solomon-Reed codes.

The merit of this book lies in the fact that it does what the title says and provides an introduction, which build the fundamentals for advanced research in this area. I read the book with minimal knowledge of error correcting and now can fully appreciate the capabilities of modern electronic devices and the ability error correcting provides.

Only problem as noted in another review, the darned price!
