Book Description

September 3, 1997 0750631015 978-0750631013 1
This is the clear guide for non-specialists to electromagnetic compatability (EMC), the effects of electromagnetic radiation and the European EMC Directive which is now in force. This book helps by explaining the basic principles of EMC, how it may be controlled in practice through filtering, shielding, appropriate printed circuit board design, and other means. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge protection are discussed. The growing concern about the effects of electromagnetic waves and fields on health are examined in detail.

This introduction provides beginners, technical and non-technical alike with a basic guide to the principles of EMC. This will prove essential reading for the thousands of people close to despair, giving them the underlying insight, in clear words, that is needed to comply with the EMC Directive, and therefore opens the door to continued trading in Europe and the World.

3.0 out of 5 stars Patchy introduction that may well leave you unenlightened, December 8, 2010

This review is from: Introduction to EMC (Paperback)
EMC is a fairly broad area, and so depending on what you want to learn, and what your existing knowledge is, this book may or may not tell you much. In my case I learned a bit, but not much. I have some existing knowledge of EMC, and a desire to better understand what is going on and also about testing. After reading this book I have a little more understanding about EMC, and a little more about testing, but not much. I do however know a lot more about health and other aspects of EM waves and its testing, which occupied about 60 pages of the 192 pages of actual content. Unfortunately I have no interest in this, and I don't even consider it part of EMC.

The book seems to be pitched at those with a fairly low level of prior knowledge, which is fair enough, however I don't think those without an electrical/electronics background would understand much of it. The book starts with the ultrabasics, with an explaination of what the units of hertz are (kHz, MHz, GHz etc), then a brief explanation of electric and magnetic fields, but then later you are assumed to know about more advanced concepts like ground planes, inductance, impedance matching, chokes, common mode interference, etc. There is little reliance on maths, which is a good this in a basic book like this.

The sections on controls of EMC problems is quite good, explaining shielding, transients, filters, and PCB layout issues. The style of the book is also quite readable.

Overall it's hard to recommend this book without reservation, however take advantage of the "look inside" function on Amazon and see for yourself if the content is going to provide you with the introduction you're looking for.
